Hunab Ku — The Encounter

The One God of Measure, who shapes the world from stone and gold · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Hunab Ku

In the reckoning of the elder peoples there is One God above the gods, called the Measurer, from whom all motion and all stillness proceed. Hunab Ku gives no form to itself, for it is the act of measuring rather than the thing measured; yet when the world must be set right, it borrows a body from the bones of the land. The lower half is raw mountain, sluggish and patient as the turning of the long count; the upper half is sheathed in worked gold, every plate a date, a tally, a law of the heavens. Priests carved these glyphs to remind the One God what shape the year should hold. Where it walks, rivers find old courses again and crooked things are made straight, whether they wished to be or not. It does not hate and it does not love. It simply corrects, and what it corrects it does not restore. To stand before it is to be weighed against the order of creation and found, almost always, wanting.

Measure of Creation. Hunab Ku embodies the ordering of the world. At the start of each of its turns it chooses one: Stone (its slams deal an extra 7 (2d6) bludgeoning damage and it has resistance to all damage until its next turn) or Gold (the glow of its plating sheds bright light in 30 ft.; the first creature that hits it before its next turn is blinded until the end of its turn unless it succeeds a DC 16 Constitution save). This is its signature trait.

Cosmic Stillness. When Hunab Ku is reduced to 0 hit points, it instead drops to 1 hit point and becomes inert and unstrikeable until the end of its next turn, then rises and acts normally. This trait recharges after a long rest.

Siege Monster. Hunab Ku deals double damage to objects and structures.

Actions

Multiattack. Hunab Ku makes two Gilded Slam attacks. It can replace one with Sundering Word if available.

Gilded Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (3d10 + 7) bludgeoning damage, and if the target is Large or smaller it is knocked prone.

Sundering Word (Recharge 5-6). Hunab Ku speaks a syllable of the world's making in a 30-foot cone. Each creature there makes a DC 16 Constitution saving throw, taking 36 (8d8) thunder damage and being knocked prone on a failure, or half damage on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Weight of the World. Reaction — When a creature within 10 ft. moves, Hunab Ku can make a Gilded Slam against it. On a hit, the target's speed is also reduced to 0 until the start of its next turn.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Tremor. Hunab Ku stamps. Each creature within 10 ft. must succeed on a DC 16 Dexterity save or be knocked prone.

Gilded Slam. Hunab Ku makes one Gilded Slam attack.

Reorder (Costs 2 Actions). Hunab Ku reshapes the ground in a 20-foot radius into difficult terrain, and each creature there must succeed on a DC 16 Strength save or be moved 10 feet in a direction of Hunab Ku's choosing.

A colossus of weathered stone and root rises from the earth, its torso encased in ornate gold plates carved with the glyphs of the calendar, a cold radiance burning where a face should be.

Ordered Step (signature). Difficult terrain costs the Tally no extra movement, and it cannot be knocked prone while it has more than 0 hit points.

Actions

Glyph-Carved Fist. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (2d10 + 6) bludgeoning damage.

Reactions

Set Right. Reaction — When an ally within 15 ft. would be moved or knocked prone, the Tally can negate that effect.

A lesser idol of the same gilded stone, sent to keep a single hero or hold a single threshold while the Measurer reorders the wider world.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP6d10 + 18 (51) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open in Stone mode and wade into the cluster, knocking front-liners prone with Gilded Slam. Save Sundering Word for two or more bunched targets. Pair it with a bigger threat as the immovable anchor of the fight; kill-priority is whoever can keep it slowed or grappled.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP12d12 + 48 (126) To-hit+7Save DC15

Lead with Gold mode to blind the first striker, then Multiattack the heaviest melee threat. Trigger Weight of the World when a fragile caster tries to reposition. Use it to hold the center while adds flank; kill-priority is the party's mobility or escape route.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP17d12 + 85 (195) To-hit+9Save DC16

Run it as the centerpiece boss. Open in Stone mode for resistance, Multiattack to drop two heroes prone, then Sundering Word the cluster the moment it recharges. Spend legendary actions on Tremor and Reorder to deny footing; let Cosmic Stillness bait the party into a wasted alpha-strike, then rise and break their line.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Hunab Ku?

Hunab Ku is CR 11 (7,200 XP) at its native tier 3, built for parties of levels 11-15. Tier 1 and tier 2 stat lines are provided to scale it down to roughly CR 2 or CR 6 for lower-level tables; only the numbers change, the traits stay identical.

Can Hunab Ku be a companion or ally?

The full colossus is a boss, not a buddy, but the companion block 'Itzamna's Tally, Bound' is a scaled-down gilded idol you can hand to a player or run as a stationary guardian ally. It holds ground, refuses to be knocked prone, and can negate forced movement on a nearby friend.

Is Hunab Ku solo-capable?

Yes. With legendary actions, two strong reactions to footing, and the Cosmic Stillness fake-out, it can headline an encounter alone. To soften it, drop the legendary actions and the band falls back toward a tough single-tier threat you can pair with adds.
