Hundun — The Encounter

The Faceless God of Primordial Chaos, blind to all order · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Hundun

In the oldest tellings of the Middle Kingdom, before the ten thousand things were named, there was Hundun—the undifferentiated whole, the god of the primordial soup from which heaven and earth had not yet been cut apart. It is described as a great beast like a winged hound or a faceless sack of fur, with six legs and four wings, possessing no eyes, no ears, no mouth, and no nostrils. The sages held that order itself was a wound: when the emperors of the North and South Seas bored seven openings into Hundun's blank head, one each day, to grant it sight and breath as other creatures have, on the seventh day Hundun died, and the world of separation was born from its passing. What walks now is the part that refused the cutting—chaos that crawled back from death, hating every boundary, every name, every drawn line. It does not hunger. It unmakes.

Faceless. Hundun has no eyes, ears, mouth, or nostrils. It is immune to the blinded and deafened conditions and to effects that rely on sight (such as gaze attacks), and it cannot be blinded or deafened. It perceives only by blindsight and is effectively blind beyond 60 feet.

Aura of Unmaking. Order frays around it. Any creature that starts its turn within 15 feet of Hundun and is concentrating on a spell must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or lose concentration. Summoned and conjured creatures within this aura have disadvantage on attack rolls.

Formless Resilience. Having no organs to pierce, Hundun is immune to critical hits and cannot be reduced below 1 hit point by a single instance of damage that is not radiant or force damage; instead it drops to 1 and reforms its mass.

Actions

Multiattack. Hundun makes one Maw of Nothing attack and two Rending Claw attacks.

Rending Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d8+5) slashing damage.

Maw of Nothing. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (4d6+6) force damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or be unable to take reactions until the start of its next turn as its sense of self briefly dissolves.

Chaos Breath (Recharge 5-6). Hundun exhales raw unmade essence in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area makes a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw, taking 49 (14d6) force damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. Creatures that fail are also pushed 10 feet and knocked prone.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Unbeing (Reaction). When a creature Hundun can sense within 60 feet drops to 0 hit points, Hundun can use its reaction to absorb the dissolving essence, regaining 15 (3d8+2) hit points.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Claw. Hundun makes one Rending Claw attack.

Buffeting Wings (Costs 2 Actions). Hundun beats its great wings. Each creature within 10 feet must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or be pushed 15 feet and knocked prone. Hundun can then fly up to half its speed.

Veil of Chaos (Costs 2 Actions). Hundun blurs the boundary of the real. Until the start of its next turn, attack rolls against it have disadvantage, and the next creature to hit it with a melee attack must make a DC 16 Wisdom save or take 9 (2d8) force damage.

A mountainous mass of matted fur and feathered wings, six clawed legs scrabbling beneath a body that has no face at all—only a shaggy, eyeless void where order should be. Where it treads, edges soften and certainties come undone.

Shared Blindness (signature). Hundun perceives through Hundun's chaos. It has blindsight 30 ft. and cannot be blinded; while within 60 feet of Hundun it has advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.

Actions

Clawed Limb. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+5) slashing damage.

Reactions

Interposing Mass. When an ally within 5 feet is hit by an attack, Hundun can use its reaction to take half the damage in their stead, throwing its formless bulk into the path.

A lesser gob of the same chaos, half-shaped and lurching, that trails the god like a shadow that forgot to lie flat.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP45 (6d10+12) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with Chaos Breath the first round it can catch two or more PCs in the cone, then wade into the squishiest caster—its Aura of Unmaking shreds concentration. Kill-priority is anyone holding a buff or summon. At this tier run it as a terrifying single set-piece; drop the legendary actions if the table is brand new.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP133 (14d10+56) To-hit+7Save DC15

Lead with Buffeting Wings to scatter a clustered party, then fly over the line and Maw of Nothing the healer to lock their reactions. Save Chaos Breath for when three or more are bunched. Use Unbeing on any downed ally or PC to claw back hit points and grind the fight long.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC17HP195 (17d12+85) To-hit+9Save DC16

This is its home band—run it as a true solo boss. Open with Chaos Breath, then full Multiattack on the front-liner while spending legendary actions on Veil of Chaos (to blunt nova rounds) and end-of-turn Claws on casters. When bloodied, lean on Unbeing and Buffeting Wings to keep the party scattered and bleeding. Pair with the Wuhua companion only if you want a longer, attrition-style fight.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Hundun?

Native CR 11 (XP 7,200) at its home Tier 3 band, built as a solo boss with legendary actions. The stat record also provides scaled Tier 1 (~CR 2) and Tier 2 (~CR 6) versions with identical traits and only the numbers moved, so you can drop it into any party level.

Can Hundun be a companion or ally?

Not Hundun itself—it is a faceless force of unmaking that understands no tongue and serves no will. But the record includes Wuhua, the Bewildered, a lesser chaos-gob (AC 14, 117 HP) that can fight beside the party or beside Hundun, sharing its blind sight and throwing its bulk to soak hits.

Why is Hundun an aberration and not a beast or fiend?

Hundun is the undifferentiated primordial chaos of Chinese myth—a being from before order, sight, and form existed. Its faceless, organ-less, reality-fraying nature is classic aberration territory, so it is statted as a Huge aberration rather than a beast despite its animal silhouette.
