Idun — The Encounter

Keeper of the golden apples, ever-young goddess of renewal · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Idun

Idun keeps the orchard whose fruit no winter touches. From her basket she draws golden apples, and the gods who taste them shed their years and rise renewed; without her keeping, even the mighty would grey and fail. She is gentle but not frail, for the same power that wards off death warms the hands that wield it, and a touch of her renewing light burns the rot of the grave and the cold of the pit. The grimoires count her among the bright powers who hold the line not by the sword but by the gift, walking the field where others fall and lifting them whole again. Steal her away and the bright halls dim; the longer she is gone, the swifter the strong grow weak. Slay her and the orchard withers, and with it the long memory of a world that had forgotten how to die. Few enemies fear her blade. The wise fear how long she can keep their foes standing.

Golden Apple of Youth. Signature. Idun carries an inexhaustible basket of golden apples. As an action she may feed one creature within 5 ft. an apple; that creature regains 22 (4d8+4) hit points and is cured of one disease and the blinded, deafened, or poisoned condition. While Idun lives, any allied creature that drops to 0 hit points within 30 ft. of her is instead reduced to 1 hit point (this cannot be used on the same creature more than once per minute).

Undying Bloom. Idun cannot be aged by any effect and is immune to magic that would reduce her hit point maximum. The first time each turn she would take damage that does not reduce her to 0, she reduces that damage by 5.

Actions

Multiattack. Idun makes two Renewing Touch attacks, or one Renewing Touch and casts a spell.

Renewing Touch. Melee Spell Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d8+5) radiant damage, and if the target is a fiend or undead it has disadvantage on attack rolls until the end of its next turn.

Bloom of Spring (Recharge 5-6). Idun calls a surge of new life in a 20-foot radius centered on a point she can see. Allies in the area regain 13 (3d8) hit points and gain 13 temporary hit points. Each enemy in the area must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or take 27 (6d8) radiant damage, or half on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Restful Word. Bonus Action. Idun whispers renewal to one ally within 30 ft. that can hear her. The ally ends one effect causing it to be frightened, charmed, or paralyzed, or regains 9 (2d8) hit points.

A serene goddess in a long embroidered gown stands beside her ever-blooming tree, offering a single golden apple from an open palm. Her braid falls to her waist and her face holds the calm of one who has never known old age.

Song of Skalds (signature). At the start of each of Idun's turns, one ally within 30 ft. that can hear him gains a d6 it may add to one attack roll, ability check, or saving throw before its next turn.

Actions

Runed Harpstring. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) thunder damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution save or be unable to take reactions until the end of its next turn.

Reactions

Verse of Warding. When an ally Idun can see within 30 ft. is hit by an attack, he adds 3 to that ally's AC against the triggering attack, possibly causing it to miss.

Idun's husband, the silver-tongued poet, never strays far from her orchard; his verses steady allied hands while she keeps them whole.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC13HP8d8+24 (60) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open by feeding the Golden Apple to your toughest ally, then hang back behind the front line. Use Renewing Touch only on enemies that close in; your job is to keep allies up, not deal damage. Pair her with a bigger martial threat so she is never the priority the party should kill first.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC15HP13d8+65 (123) To-hit+7Save DC15

Stage her behind a flagship boss; she is the heal piece, not the kill. Open with Bloom of Spring when allies cluster around her, then spend each turn topping up the most wounded ally and burning fiends/undead with Renewing Touch. Kill-priority her ONLY after the front line falls, or the boss never goes down.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d8+120 (210) To-hit+9Save DC17

Run her as the linchpin support of a larger warband. Keep her shielded; while she lives, allies refuse to die from her Golden Apple ward. Open with Bloom of Spring, Restful Word to break a paralyze or fear each turn, and let your damage dealers do the killing. The party must focus her down or the fight is unwinnable by attrition.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Idun?

Her native build is CR 6 (Tier 2, levels 5-10): AC 15, 123 HP, +7 to hit, save DC 15. Scale her up the table with the Tier 1 (CR ~2) or Tier 3 (CR ~11) line; the traits and actions stay identical, only the numbers move.

Can Idun be a companion or ally?

Yes — she is built as an add-on support piece, not a solo boss, so she shines as an allied healer or escort NPC. Her Golden Apple revives a dropped ally and her Bloom of Spring buffs the whole party. She comes paired with Bragi, Bound, a bard-like companion who buffs and wards alongside her.

Is Idun safe to use in published or commercial content?

Yes. Idun is drawn directly from public-domain Norse mythology — the goddess who keeps the golden apples of youth — and is statted with SRD 5.1 terms only (celestial type, generic conditions and spells). Nothing here uses proprietary game-cosmology, so the record is IP-clean.
