Ilargi — The Encounter

Basque moon-maiden who dances the dead toward dawn · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Ilargi

In the old Basque reckoning, Ilargi is the moon herself, sister and daughter of the earth, sent each night to light the road of the dead so that wandering souls do not lose their way before dawn. The people called to her at burials and turned coins beneath her light, for she was said to receive the spirits of the departed and shepherd them gently through the dark. Where she dances, the slain go quiet and the lost grow calm; where she withdraws her face, the unhallowed grow bold. She does not war for conquest but to guard the threshold between night and morning, striking only those who would drag souls down before their hour. To meet her is to be measured: the faithful she lights homeward, the cruel she dazzles blind and leaves to stumble in a dark that answers only to her.

Lunar Veil. In dim light or darkness, attack rolls against Ilargi have disadvantage unless she is incapacitated. In bright light she loses this benefit and her fly speed.

Waxing and Waning. Signature. Ilargi tracks a phase that shifts each round on initiative count 20. On a waxing round her attacks deal an extra 5 (2d4) radiant damage; on a waning round she may teleport 30 ft. as part of any move. She begins combat waxing.

Magic Resistance. Ilargi has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Actions

Multiattack. Ilargi makes two Crescent Lash attacks, or one Crescent Lash and casts Moonbeam (see Moonfall).

Crescent Lash. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) radiant damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of its next turn.

Moonfall (Recharge 5-6). Ilargi calls a shaft of cold moonlight onto a point within 60 ft. Each creature in a 10-ft.-radius, 40-ft.-high cylinder must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 31 (7d8) radiant damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. The lit area becomes dim light (countering her own brightness penalty) until the start of her next turn.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Moonstep. On a waning round, Ilargi can take the Disengage action as a bonus action, or teleport up to 15 ft. to an unoccupied space she can see in dim light or darkness.

A slender lunar maiden crowned with green crescent horns dances barefoot in silver greaves and trailing moon-blue silk, suspended beneath a vast crescent arch flanked by twin pale orbs.

Tidal Pull (signature). While Ilargi is within 30 ft. of Ilargi, allies have advantage on saving throws against being frightened, and Ilargi's Moonfall deals an extra 3 (1d6) radiant damage.

Actions

Gravity Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) bludgeoning damage, and a Large or smaller target must succeed on a DC 13 Strength save or be knocked prone.

Reactions

Eclipse Guard. When Ilargi is hit by an attack, Ilargi interposes its mass, reducing the damage by 7 (2d6) and becoming the new target if the attacker is within 5 ft. of Ilargi.

One of the twin moon-orbs detaches and rolls at her heel, a heavy silent satellite that shields the dancer and crushes any who close the gap.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP9d8+9 (49) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open in dim light so Lunar Veil imposes disadvantage; lead with Moonfall on the clustered party, then lash the spellcaster to blind it. Kill-priority is anyone carrying a light source that brightens her square. Pair her with a heavier melee threat she can kite around.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP19d8+38 (123) To-hit+8Save DC15

Open waxing for bonus radiant, then exploit waning rounds to Moonstep out of melee and behind a flank. Drop Moonfall on the tightest cluster the moment it recharges; blind the party's best striker with Crescent Lash. She is the elusive caster piece, not the wall, so pair her with a bruiser boss who holds the line.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP26d8+104 (221) To-hit+9Save DC17

Treat every waning round as a free reposition, teleporting to keep ranged casters in Moonfall and herself in darkness. Lead Moonfall onto healers, then blind the tank with Crescent Lash so it wastes turns. She supports a true legendary boss; never expect her to soak focus fire, she dances away from it.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Ilargi?

Her native build is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a Tier 2 party of levels 5-10. The stat record also provides scaled Tier 1 (CR ~2) and Tier 3 (CR ~11) versions; the traits and actions are identical across all three, only the numbers move.

Can Ilargi be a companion or ally?

Yes. As the Basque moon-goddess who guides the dead, she makes a natural patron or guardian-ally for good or neutral parties. Run her allied stat block at one tier below the party so she supports without overshadowing, and lean on Moonfall and her blinding lash to control the battlefield rather than to dominate it.

How do players counter her Lunar Veil?

Light. Lunar Veil and her flight both depend on dim light or darkness, so a Daylight spell, a sunrod, or simply dragging the fight into a bright area strips her defenses and grounds her. Her own Moonfall creates dim light to restore the veil, so denying her darkness is the whole counterplay.
