Isfet — The Encounter

Bone-Herald of Chaos, Disorder Walking the River of the Dead · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Isfet

In the oldest funerary texts, Isfet is the dark twin of Ma'at, the truth and order that holds the world in balance. Isfet is not a god to be worshipped but a force to be held back: chaos, injustice, violence, and the slow rot of all things made right. The priest-kings of the Two Lands believed that every dawn was a victory over Isfet, won anew by the sun's crossing of the sky. This skeletal herald is what remains when that battle is lost in some forgotten tomb: a warden-corpse risen to spread disorder, gilded in the gold of pharaohs it once guarded and now defiles. Its golden spear is no honor-blade but an instrument of unmaking, each thrust loosening the threads that bind sense to a mortal mind. Where Isfet sets its feet, scales tip, oaths break, and the dead grow restless. To put it down is to restore, however briefly, the order it exists only to devour.

Disorder Incarnate. Isfet is the embodiment of chaos given bone and gold. The first time on each of its turns that it hits a creature, that creature has disadvantage on the next attack roll or ability check it makes before the start of Isfet's next turn, as its sense of order unravels.

Sweeping Reach. Isfet's golden spear has 10 ft. reach, and it can make opportunity attacks against creatures that enter that reach, not only those that leave it.

Actions

Multiattack. Isfet makes two attacks with its Golden Spear.

Golden Spear. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8+4) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) necrotic damage.

Whirl of Misrule (Recharge 5-6). Isfet spins its spear in a chaotic arc. Each creature within 10 ft. must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 18 (4d8) slashing damage on a failed save and being knocked prone, or half as much damage and not knocked prone on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Riposte of Ruin. Reaction: When a creature within 10 ft. misses Isfet with a melee attack, Isfet makes one Golden Spear attack against that creature.

A hooded skeleton clad in gilded Nile bone-scale grips a golden spear in a wide, predatory stance, its grinning skull peering from beneath a worn cowl. Where it walks, order frays and the careful balance of Ma'at comes undone.

Pack of One (signature). While within 10 ft. of an ally, Isfet has advantage on attack rolls against any creature that is also within 5 ft. of that ally.

Actions

Spectral Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6+3) piercing damage plus 3 (1d6) necrotic damage.

Reactions

Fade and Reform. Reaction: When hit by an attack, Isfet becomes briefly insubstantial, halving the damage and then moving up to 15 ft. without provoking opportunity attacks.

A leaping shade of a desert jackal, bound to Isfet's chaos, that harries the flanks of any who would restore order.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with the 10 ft. reach to poke before the party closes. Save Whirl of Misrule for when two or more PCs cluster within reach. Kill-priority is the healer; pair Isfet with a tomb-guardian boss so it can flank while the bigger threat anchors the front.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP14d8+56 (119) To-hit+7Save DC15

This is the disruptor piece, not the boss. Open at the edge of its 10 ft. reach and use Riposte of Ruin to punish missed melee. When clustered, Whirl of Misrule plus prone sets up your flagship's big swing. Pin the squishiest caster and let Disorder Incarnate wreck their next save.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d8+120 (210) To-hit+9Save DC17

Run it as the order-breaking lieutenant beside a far larger Nile horror. Lead with reach pokes, riposte every miss, and dump Whirl of Misrule into any clump. Kill-priority is whoever buffs the party; Disorder Incarnate stacked on their concentration check shatters the formation.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Isfet?

Its native build is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a tier-2 party of levels 5-10. Scaled stat lines for tier 1 (levels 1-4) and tier 3 (levels 11-15) are in the tiers table; the traits and actions are identical across all three, only the numbers move.

Can Isfet be a companion or ally?

Not as a player ally; it is a chaotic undead force of disorder. But it travels with Khebet, the bound jackal-shade, a flanking companion creature you can field alongside it, or repurpose Khebet as a standalone harrier if you want the chaos without the herald.

Is Isfet a solo boss?

No. Isfet has no legendary actions and is designed as an add-on disruptor that frays a party's formation. Pair it with a larger flagship threat (a tomb-guardian or Nile horror) and let Isfet break the line while the boss does the killing.
