Itzamna — The Encounter

The Lizard-House Sky-God, dawn carved in living jade · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Itzamna

Among the codices of the lizard-house there is set down the making of Itzamna, first of the sky-fathers, who scribed the calendar and the rains and the healing of the sick. The priests tell that when the night-jaguars devoured the old sun, the god-smiths quarried a heart of living jade from the world-mountain and bound it in plates of beaten gold, and into this vessel the morning poured itself. So Itzamna walks: not flesh, but dawn made to stand and move and strike. Where its tread falls the cold mists part and the day begins early. It speaks little, for its voice is the light that breaks over the eastern temples at sunrise, and those it judges unworthy it does not curse but simply leaves in the lingering dark. Stir its idol from its plinth and the morning itself comes for you, patient, crowned, and merciless as the turning of the long count.

Dawnforged Resilience. When Itzamna would drop to 0 hit points, it instead drops to 1 hit point and gains 10 temporary hit points (no action). It can use this trait once, regaining its use at the next sunrise.

Magic Weapons. Itzamna's fist attacks are magical.

Actions

Multiattack. Itzamna makes two Crystal Fist attacks.

Crystal Fist. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d8+5) bludgeoning damage plus 4 (1d8) cold damage.

Sky-Fire Beam (Recharge 5-6). Itzamna projects a lance of dawnlight from its breast in a 60-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in the line must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 22 (5d8) radiant damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Glyph Ward. When Itzamna is hit by an attack, it can carve a warding glyph in the air, gaining a +2 bonus to AC against that attack.

A towering idol of veined blue jade and beaten gold lurches forward, its lizard-faced crown blazing with cold inner light as dawn-fire kindles in the seams of its body.

Actions

Jade Lash. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) bludgeoning damage.

Reactions

Warding Dawn. When an ally within 10 feet takes radiant or cold damage, Itzamna reduces that damage by 5.

A lesser idol of the same jade, a walking glyph-stone that reads the turning sky and sharpens the hour for its kin.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP6d12+18 (57) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with Sky-Fire Beam to line up clustered low-level parties, then wade in with Crystal Fists. Kill-priority is the squishiest spellcaster it can reach; its reach 10 ft. lets it ignore the front line. Pair it with a faster skirmisher to pin runners, as this slab is slow.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP12d12+60 (138) To-hit+7Save DC15

Lead with Sky-Fire Beam when three or more foes line up, otherwise just Multiattack the nearest melee threat into the dirt. When it would drop, Dawnforged Resilience buys a free round, so do not let players think they have killed it. This is the anvil piece, pair it with a mobile boss so the party cannot simply kite it.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d12+100 (230) To-hit+9Save DC17

Recharge Sky-Fire Beam is your alpha strike, fire it the moment a cluster forms. Glyph Ward lets it shrug the party's biggest single hit each round, so it eats a smiter and keeps swinging. Kill-priority is whoever is concentrating, and pair it with controllers, it has no answer to being kited alone.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Itzamna?

Native CR 6 (2,300 XP), built for a level 5-10 party. Use the tier-1 line (CR 2-ish) for levels 1-4 or the tier-3 line (CR 11-ish) for levels 11-15. The traits never change, only AC, HP, to-hit, save DC, and damage scale.

Can Itzamna be a companion or ally?

Yes. As a bound celestial idol it can serve a paladin, cleric, or temple-aligned party as a near-unkillable bodyguard and battering ram. Use the included Dawn-Glyph, Bound profile (or simply downshift one tier) so it supports rather than outshines the players.

Is Itzamna a good solo boss?

Not on its own. It has no legendary actions and is slow, so a smart party will kite it to death. It shines as the anvil paired with a mobile boss or controllers that punish anyone who tries to run from it.
