Ixchel, goddess of the Moon — The Encounter

Maya lady of the moon, weaver, rain, and rebirth · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Ixchel, goddess of the Moon

She is named in the old codices as Lady Rainbow and the Aged Mother of the moon — weaver of the first cloth, keeper of the birthing-bed, mistress of the rains that swell the maize. Where she walks the tides answer her and barren fields green again. The screech-owl is her herald and the rabbit her shadow upon the lunar disc, and midwives still pour water in her name when a child draws first breath. Yet the moon is twofold: she who pours the healing rain can pour the flood, and her serpent-girdle and overturned water-jar are warnings to those who break faith with field and family. Petitioners come to her shrines bearing woven cloth, river-water, and the small bones of the screech-owl, begging fair weather, safe deliverance, and the slow mercy of waning sickness. To raise a blade against her is to war against the moon itself, and the moon does not tire.

Phases of the Moon. Signature. At the start of each of Ixchel's turns, roll a d3 to set the moon's phase until her next turn. 1 — Waxing: her weapon and spell attacks deal an extra 9 (2d8) radiant damage. 2 — Full: she has advantage on attack rolls and her spell save DC increases by 1. 3 — Waning: she regains 10 hit points and any one ally she can see regains 10 hit points.

Magic Resistance. Ixchel has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Innate Spellcasting. Ixchel's spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 17, +9 to hit with spell attacks). She can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components: at will — sacred flame, guidance, light; 3/day each — moonbeam, lesser restoration, spiritual weapon; 1/day each — mass cure wounds, flame strike, control water.

Actions

Multiattack. Ixchel makes two Lunar Spear attacks, or uses Lunar Spear once and casts a cantrip.

Lunar Spear. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+5) piercing damage plus 9 (2d8) radiant damage. On a ranged hit, the spear returns to her hand at the end of the turn.

Tidewright Staff (Recharge 5-6). Ixchel raises her staff and pulls the tides. Each creature in a 30-foot cone must make a DC 17 Strength saving throw, taking 36 (8d8) bludgeoning damage and being knocked prone on a failed save, or half as much damage and not knocked prone on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Weaver's Mending (Bonus). Ixchel touches a creature within 5 feet, or herself, and ends one disease or one of the following conditions affecting it: blinded, deafened, or paralyzed.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Moonstep. Ixchel magically teleports up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space she can see.

Sacred Flame (Costs 1 Action). Ixchel casts sacred flame at one creature she can see.

Rebirth Tide (Costs 2 Actions). Ixchel channels lunar renewal. She and each ally within 30 feet of her regain 11 (2d10) hit points, and each affected creature may immediately end the frightened condition on itself.

Crowned in a wild corona of moon-white hair, the Maya lady of the moon stands robed in lunar warplate, a golden moon-spear leveled in one hand and the ornate Tidewright Staff blazing in the other.

Lunar Herald (signature). While the owl is within 60 feet of an allied spellcaster, that caster's spell save DC increases by 1.

Actions

Talons. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8+3) slashing damage plus 7 (2d6) radiant damage.

Reactions

Death-Cry Warning. When an ally the owl can see is hit by an attack, the owl shrieks; the ally gains 7 (2d6) temporary hit points and the attacker has disadvantage on its next attack before the end of its next turn.

A pale messenger-owl of the moon, its cry an omen of birth or of passing, circling always at the goddess's shoulder.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with moonbeam on the cluster and keep its beam sliding onto whoever stacks up. Kill-priority is the party healer so her own self-healing phases outpace theirs. Pair her with a melee skirmisher; at this size she is a backline caster who must not be charged.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP14d8+56 (119) To-hit+6Save DC14

Lead with the Tidewright cone the round the party bunches up, then spiritual weapon to pin the squishiest caster. Lunar Spear from range and let it return so she never closes. She supports a bruiser boss here — feed her healing into the front line.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP21d8+105 (200) To-hit+9Save DC17

Run her solo: open with flame strike on the densest cluster, then alternate Lunar Spear Multiattack and legendary Moonstep to stay un-cornered. Re-roll Phases every turn and lean Waxing/Full for damage; when bloodied, swing Waning and spend Rebirth Tide to undo the burst. Kill-priority is always the enemy healer; she can out-sustain anyone she cannot out-burst.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Ixchel, goddess of the Moon?

Her home tier is 3 (levels 11-15), built around CR 11 (7,200 XP): AC 18, 200 HP, +9 to hit, spell save DC 17. Because she is solo-capable with legendary actions, that sheet already plays up a band — drop her to the Tier 2 or Tier 1 line in the tiers array to use her as an add-on instead of a centerpiece.

Can Ixchel, goddess of the Moon be a companion or ally?

Yes — as a divine patron she makes a powerful NPC ally or quest-giver, her Phases of the Moon and Rebirth Tide bolstering the party rather than the foe. The Screech-Owl, Bound is provided as a lighter bound companion if you want her lunar herald at the table without the full goddess.

Is Ixchel safe to publish (IP)?

Yes — she is drawn entirely from public-domain Maya mythology: the moon-and-rain goddess of the codices, Lady Rainbow, weaver and midwife, with her screech-owl, serpent-girdle, and water-jar. No proprietary cosmology, ranks, or settings are used; her statline is built on SRD 5.1 spells, types, and conditions only.
