Jeoseung Saja — The Encounter

The black-hatted messenger who comes for every name · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Jeoseung Saja

When a life reaches its appointed end, three of these messengers are dispatched from the courts of the underworld to fetch the soul by name. They wear the wide black hat and dark robe of a clerk on official business, for theirs is not malice but procedure: a name is written, a name is collected, a name is delivered to be weighed. The lantern they carry lights the road the dead must walk and gutters out only when the soul is safely escorted across. They are punctual, incorruptible, and deaf to pleading, though clever mortals have been known to delay them with rice, courtesy, or a clerical error in the register. To strike one is to brawl with death's bureaucracy itself; to refuse to go with it is merely to make it return, patient and unhurried, on another night with your name still at the top of its page.

Ledger of the Named. The messenger carries a register that has already written down the name of one creature it has been sent to claim. As a bonus action it can read the name, choosing one creature it can see within 60 ft.; that creature is the marked soul until the marked soul drops to 0 hit points or the messenger marks another. The messenger has advantage on attack rolls against its marked soul, and the marked soul cannot regain hit points from any source other than its own actions.

Incorporeal Passage. The messenger can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain. It takes 5 (1d10) force damage if it ends its turn inside an object.

Office of the Reaper. The messenger cannot be turned, and it makes death saving throws as though it were a living creature it is bound to escort: the first time it would drop to 0 hit points, it instead drops to 1 hit point and may read the name as part of the same reaction.

Actions

Multiattack. The messenger makes two attacks with its soul-binding chains, or one with its chains and uses Toll the Lantern.

Soul-Binding Chain. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (3d6 + 3) necrotic damage, and if the target is the marked soul it is grappled (escape DC 14).

Toll the Lantern (Recharge 5-6). The messenger raises its soul-lantern and tolls a final summons in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. A creature reduced to 0 hit points by this damage and whose name is in the ledger does not stabilize on its own.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Beckon the Departed. Reaction (when a creature within 10 ft. drops to 0 hit points): the messenger gains 10 temporary hit points and may move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

A tall figure in a black gat and embroidered hanbok glides just above the ground, soul-lantern in one hand and an open ledger of names in the other, ghostly chains trailing from its sleeves like smoke.

Lantern-Keeper (signature). While within 30 ft. of the Jeoseung Saja, an ally who can see its lantern has advantage on saving throws against being frightened, and an ally reduced to 0 hit points can be stabilized by the Jeoseung Saja as a bonus action.

Actions

Spirit Chain. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) necrotic damage.

Reactions

Mark the Name. When an ally hits a creature the Jeoseung Saja can see, the Jeoseung Saja may write that creature's name; the next attack against it before the end of the next turn has advantage.

A lesser messenger sent to assist the collection, lantern held high so no soul slips into the dark unescorted.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open by reading a name to mark the party's healer or weakest defender, then drag it away with a chain. If the group clusters, time Toll the Lantern for the cone. Kill-priority is the marked soul - it cannot be healed by others. Pair it with a heavier underworld boss; the Jeoseung Saja is the collector piece, not the centerpiece.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP13d8+65 (123) To-hit+6Save DC15

Mark the party's healer first, chain-grapple it, and toll the lantern when two or more foes stand in the cone. Hover and phase through walls to stay on the marked soul; Beckon the Departed when a creature falls nearby to refresh itself and reposition. It plays best beside a bigger threat - let the boss bloody them while the messenger collects the dying.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d8+120 (210) To-hit+8Save DC17

Mark the strongest single-target threat to deny it healing, then alternate chain attacks and recharged Tolls to grind the group down. Use Office of the Reaper to survive the first death and immediately re-mark. Still an add-on at this tier - pair it with a legendary underworld lord so its relentless soul-collection has a flagship to support.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Jeoseung Saja?

Its home statline is CR 6 (2,300 XP) for a level 5-10 party. Tier-down and tier-up blocks are provided for CR 2 (level 1-4) and roughly CR 11 (level 11-15) play - the traits stay identical and only the numbers move.

Can Jeoseung Saja be a companion or ally?

Yes. Use the Hat-Bearer, Bound companion block - a lesser messenger whose lantern stabilizes the dying and shields allies from fear, while marking enemies for the party to focus. It fits a death-touched cleric, an underworld envoy, or a character who struck a bargain to escort souls.

Is Jeoseung Saja a single boss or part of a group?

The mini comes as three figures and the creature is an add-on rather than a solo centerpiece. Field it beside a larger underworld threat, or run all three as a messenger trio (one statted block plus two Hat-Bearer companions) closing in to collect the named soul.
