Jorogumo
Jorogumo — The Encounter
The Binding Bride, spider-woman who weds the doomed · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Jorogumo
In the cedar shadows of the mountain passes she keeps her teahouse, and travelers swear the lady who pours for them is the loveliest they have met. She speaks of a husband long dead, of a lonely hearth, of a bridal bed warmed and waiting — and the words wind tighter than any rope. Only when the candle gutters do they see the truth below the obi: the bristled abdomen, the legs folded in the dark like a closing hand. She prefers her victims willing, walked into the web on their own feet, for a meal taken in trust keeps longest. She binds the corpse in silk, hangs it among the rafters with the others, and weeps a little, as a widow should, before she sets out her fan and waits for the next lonely man to climb her road at dusk.
Run Jorogumo in Sixty Seconds
- Hold for the hook: she opens with Beguiling Bride, not a bite — charm the party face or the front-line tank before initiative ever matters.
- Open the fight by Web Snaring whoever can burst webs the slowest; remember the silk is AC 10, 12 hp, and vulnerable to fire — a torch frees a friend fast.
- Kill-priority for the party: drop the jorogumo, not the webbing — but if you can't reach her, burn the silk holding your strongest ally.
- When bloodied, she stops trading blows and turns runner: Skitter Aside every chance, climb a wall or ceiling, and rain Web Snares from above.
- Three ways to run her: a seductive ambush in her teahouse (charm-heavy), a webbed-rafter dungeon fight (terrain + cocooned victims), or a controller paired with a heavier boss who feasts on her snared prey.
Jorogumo
Large monstrosity (shapechanger), neutral evil
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINESpider Climb. The jorogumo can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without an ability check.
Web Sense. While in contact with a web, the jorogumo knows the exact location of any other creature in contact with the same web.
Beguiling Bride. Signature. When the jorogumo speaks softly for at least 6 seconds to one creature that can hear and see her courtly upper half, that creature must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed until the end of its next turn. While charmed this way, the creature cannot willingly move away from her and has disadvantage on saving throws against her web. A creature that succeeds is immune to this trait for 24 hours.
Actions
Multiattack. The jorogumo makes two attacks: one with her Fanged Bite and one with her Raking Leg, or she uses Web Snare in place of one attack.
Fanged Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) piercing damage, and the target must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw, taking 14 (4d6) poison damage on a failure, or half as much on a success.
Raking Leg. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) slashing damage.
Web Snare (Recharge 5-6). Ranged Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, range 30/60 ft., one creature. Hit: the target is restrained by webbing. As an action, the restrained creature can make a DC 14 Strength check, bursting the webbing on a success. The webbing can also be attacked and destroyed (AC 10; 12 hp; vulnerability to fire damage; immunity to bludgeoning, poison, and psychic damage).
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Skitter Aside. Reaction. When a creature the jorogumo can see ends a melee attack against her, she moves up to half her speed without provoking opportunity attacks from that creature.
Her painted face and silk kimono end at the waist where a swollen spider's bulk takes over, eight barbed legs splayed like the ribs of a black parasol. She offers a fan, a smile, and a marriage that ends in silk.
Jorogumo, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINELure-Caller (signature). Still half in love with the thing that took him, the suitor calls travelers up the road and toward the web; the first creature he names that can hear him must make a DC 13 Wisdom save or move toward the nearest jorogumo or web on its next turn.
Actions
Wedded Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d6 + 2) slashing damage from a rusted, silk-wrapped blade.
Reactions
Take My Place. When the jorogumo within 5 feet would be hit by an attack, the suitor steps into the strike and is hit instead.
A man cocooned to the chest in greying silk, freed only enough to fight for the bride who devours him.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Beguiling Bride to pin the strongest melee fighter in place, then Web Snare the party's ranged threat. Kill-priority is whoever can free allies (high STR or fire). She is the trap piece — pair her with brutes who punish a webbed, charmed target.
Lead with Beguiling Bride on the cleric or bard, Web Snare the caster, then bite the charmed target for the poison. Use Skitter Aside to keep out of reach and let her webs do the holding. Pair her with a bigger boss — she is the controller, not the centerpiece.
Charm and snare the party's best save-or-suck caster first, then full-attack the restrained victim. She refuses to be cornered — Skitter Aside resets her position every round. Use her to lock down a flank while a flagship threat crushes the freed PCs.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Jorogumo?
Her home statline is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a party of levels 5-10. Tier-1 and Tier-3 versions are provided if you want to run her against levels 1-4 or 11-15 — the traits stay identical and only the numbers shift.
Can Jorogumo be a companion or ally?
Not the jorogumo herself — she is a predator who weds to devour. The included companion, the Silk-Bound Suitor, is a half-cocooned thrall who lures travelers and throws himself in front of her blows; use him as a minion that escorts the jorogumo, or as a tragic NPC the party might free.
Is she solo_capable?
No. She has no legendary actions, so a single jorogumo against a full party will be ground down fast. She shines as a controller add-on — charm and snare the party while a larger flagship threat does the killing, or run several thralls and cocooned husks alongside her.
