Jubokko
Jubokko — The Encounter
The Blood Tree that grew on slaughtered fields and drinks the fallen · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Jubokko
Where battles end and no one comes to bury the dead, the blood soaks down to the roots, and sometimes a tree learns the taste. So was born the Jubokko, the Blood Tree, sprung from a field of slaughter and grown monstrous on the lifeforce that fed it. By day it stands silent among the grave-markers, indistinguishable from any war-scarred trunk; travelers who shelter beneath it are seized by sudden boughs, drained pale, and added to the harvest that keeps it alive. This one rose higher still, drawn into the host of a calamity-god as a general of the field. The dead commander whose helm crowns its trunk did not die so much as become part of the tree, and the tattered standard upon its back is no banner of loyalty but a trophy. It does not hate. It hungers, patiently, the way old trees keep time.
Run Jubokko in Sixty Seconds
- Hold still, looks like terrain. Until it acts the Jubokko is just a dead tree on cursed ground (False Appearance) — open by letting the party walk into 15-ft. reach, then grapple.
- Grapple is the whole plan. Branch Lash to seize a target, then Impaling Roots drains blood and heals the tree — kill-priority for players is freeing the grappled ally (escape DC 15) before it gets eaten.
- It heals off the hurt. Bloodthirst gives advantage vs. anyone already wounded and heals it for half the damage dealt; when the party is bloodied, the fight tilts hard toward the tree.
- Bring fire. It resists nonmagical piercing and slashing, so mundane arrows and blades barely scratch it — magic and fire chew through it fast.
- Three ways to run it: a lurking ambush by a lone grave-tree (False Appearance reveal), the immovable anchor beside a faster boss general, or a grove of Saplings funneling the wounded back to the elder.
Jubokko
Large plant, neutral evil
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEFalse Appearance. While the Jubokko remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from a blasted, war-scarred tree rooted in cursed ground.
Bloodthirst. Signature. The Jubokko craves the blood of the wounded. It has advantage on melee attacks against any creature that is below its hit point maximum, and against any creature that has taken damage since the start of the Jubokko's last turn. The first time each turn it deals damage to such a creature, it regains hit points equal to half the damage dealt.
Actions
Multiattack. The Jubokko makes two Branch Lash attacks. It can replace one with a use of Impaling Roots if a target is grappled.
Branch Lash. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage, and if the target is a Large or smaller creature it is grappled (escape DC 15). Until the grapple ends, the target is restrained and the Jubokko can use Impaling Roots against it.
Impaling Roots. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature grappled by the Jubokko. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or take 7 (2d6) necrotic damage as the tree drinks its blood. The Jubokko regains hit points equal to the necrotic damage dealt this way.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Drink Deep (Reaction). When a creature within 5 feet of the Jubokko is reduced to 0 hit points or dies, the Jubokko may roots-feast on the spilled blood, regaining 10 (3d6) hit points.
A war-twisted tree heaves itself upright on a tangle of grasping roots, a dead general's helmet fused into its splitting trunk and a torn battle-standard still lashed across its back, arrows bristling from bark that weeps red.
Jubokko, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEBlood-Fed (signature). While within 30 feet of fresh blood (a creature that has taken damage this turn), the Sapling has advantage on its attack rolls and moves silently, leaving no trail.
Actions
Thorn Whip. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) piercing damage, and the Sapling pulls the target up to 10 feet toward it.
Reactions
Cling On. When an adjacent ally would be reduced to 0 hit points, the Sapling lashes roots around them; the ally instead drops to 1 hit point, and the Sapling takes the remaining damage.
A young offshoot of the Blood Tree, still mobile on creeping roots, planted to guard its parent and drag the wounded within reach of the elder's boughs.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open by reaching out 15 ft. to grapple the squishiest body in the front rank, then chew on it every round to heal back up. Kill-priority is whoever it has grappled, so the party must spend actions to free them. Pair it with a faster melee general that pins the line while the tree pulls stragglers in.
Open with a grapple via Branch Lash, then Impaling Roots the grappled target to drain blood and self-heal — Bloodthirst gives advantage on anything already wounded, so it snowballs against a bloodied party. Make freeing the grappled ally the priority, and burn it with fire or magic damage since it shrugs off mundane piercing/slashing. It is the anchor piece: stake it beside a calamity-god general so the party can't ignore either threat.
Same play, bigger numbers: grapple, impale, and feast — at this tier Drink Deep plus the impale heal makes it nearly impossible to grind down while wounded foes stand near it. Force-move or teleport the grappled ally out of its 15-ft. reach to deny the heal loop. It pairs as the immovable centerpiece of a battlefield-of-the-dead set; let a mobile boss harry the party toward its boughs.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Jubokko?
Jubokko is built at CR 6 (2,300 XP) in its native Tier 2 band — a centerpiece bruiser for parties of levels 5-10. Scaled stat blocks are provided for Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and Tier 3 (levels 11-15) so you can drop it into any campaign without rebuilding it.
Can Jubokko be a companion or ally?
The Jubokko itself is a rooted, blood-hungry adversary, not a party member — it is happiest as the anchor monster of an encounter. But its offshoot, the Sapling-of-the-Slain, is statted as a controllable companion: a mobile guardian that drags the wounded into reach and can throw its roots around an ally to take a killing blow for them.
How do I keep the fight from grinding to a stalemate?
The Jubokko self-heals every time it bleeds a grappled target, so a wounded party can feed it forever. Make freeing the grappled ally the table's first job (escape DC 15, or pull them out with force-movement), and lean on fire and magic damage — it resists ordinary blades and arrows but has no defense against the burn.
