Kang Jin Star
Kang Jin Star — The Encounter
The fallen morning-star spirit who breathes winter from open palms · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Kang Jin Star
In the highland tales she is named for the cold star that hangs above the first snow, a spirit who descended from the night vault and forgot the way home. Mortals once left rice wine and paper lanterns at her shrine, begging gentle winters; those who scorned her woke to find their wells frozen solid and their hearthfires guttering blue. She does not rage. She simply opens her hands, and the warmth leaves a room, a body, a life. Folklore holds that her serenity is the cruelest thing about her, for she pities those she kills as one pities a candle she has chosen to pinch out. Her robes are said to be woven from the residue of falling stars, and the frost-antlers blooming at her throat are the antennae by which she still listens for the heavens that abandoned her. Offer her music and silence, the old grandmothers say, and never, ever beg.
Run Kang Jin Star in Sixty Seconds
- Hold range. She is a back-line star-spirit with no melee; keep her 60+ feet from the party and never let her get pinned.
- Open with Frost Ray. Tag the fastest melee attacker first to stack the speed reduction so it never closes the gap.
- Cone when clustered. Bank the Cone of Cold recharge for a tight group of three or more, then return to ray fire.
- When bloodied, kite. Lean on Cold Aura, Starfall Guard, and Veil of Frost to bleed melee chasers while you back away.
- Three ways to run her: shrine guardian (defensive, terrain-locked), roaming winter omen (mobile artillery), or the cold lieutenant beside a flagship boss.
Kang Jin Star
Medium fey (spirit), neutral evil
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINECold Aura. A creature that starts its turn within 10 feet of Kang Jin Star takes 5 (2d4) cold damage. The ground within that radius is difficult terrain coated in glittering rime.
Starfall Guard. (signature) The first time each round Kang Jin Star takes damage, drifting motes of frozen starlight orbit her. Until the start of her next turn, the next melee attack against her has disadvantage, and the attacker takes 7 (2d6) cold damage on a hit.
Actions
Multiattack. Kang Jin Star makes two Frost Ray attacks, or casts cone of cold if it is available.
Frost Ray. Ranged Spell Attack: +7 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (4d6 + 4) cold damage, and the target's speed is reduced by 10 feet until the end of its next turn.
Cone of Cold (Recharge 5-6). Kang Jin Star exhales the breath of winter in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area makes a DC 15 Constitution saving throw, taking 36 (8d8) cold damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Veil of Frost. Reaction: When a creature Kang Jin Star can see hits her with an attack, she wraps herself in mist, gaining +3 AC against that attack. If the attack misses, the attacker is blinded until the end of its next turn.
A pale immortal in trailing crimson-and-gold robes stands serene upon untrodden snow, both palms upraised, the air about her collar blossoming with antlered shapes of living frost.
Kang Jin Star, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEFrostfleet (signature). The Kang Jin Star ignores difficult terrain created by ice or snow and has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made in wintry surroundings.
Actions
Rime Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) cold damage.
Reactions
Leap of Mercy. Reaction: When its bound ally within 5 feet is hit by an attack, the Kang Jin Star interposes and takes half the damage instead.
A white hare with eyes like chips of black ice, ever circling her hem and never melting the snow it crosses.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open from max range with Frost Ray to slow the fastest melee threat before it reaches her. If foes cluster, hold for Cone of Cold; her Cold Aura punishes anyone who closes. Kill-priority is healers; pair her with a flagship boss as the back-line artillery piece.
Stay 60+ feet back and double Frost Ray to stack speed reductions, kiting frontliners through her Cold Aura. Save Cone of Cold for a tight cluster, then let Starfall Guard and Veil of Frost tax anyone who finally reaches her. She is an add-on artillery threat, not a solo; field her beside a bigger melee centerpiece.
Lead with Cone of Cold on the densest knot, then alternate Frost Rays to keep the party slowed and crawling through rime. Kill-priority is whoever can teleport or fly to her. Pairs with a durable bruiser who screens her while she freezes the field.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Kang Jin Star?
Her native build is CR 6 (2,300 XP) for a tier-2 party of levels 5-10. Scale her up to roughly CR 11 for tier 3 or down to about CR 2 for tier 1 using the tier table; the traits stay identical, only AC, HP, to-hit, save DC, and damage move.
Can Kang Jin Star be a companion or ally?
Yes, though she is aloof. As a patron-spirit she grants a frost-warden who fights at the party's side: the Snow-Hare (AC 13, 74 HP) glides through ice and snow unhindered and will leap to take half of a blow meant for its bound ally.
Is she solo-capable as a boss?
No. She has no legendary actions and folds quickly once melee reaches her, so she is built as an add-on artillery threat. Field her beside a durable centerpiece boss who can screen her while she freezes the battlefield from range.
