King Triton
King Triton — The Encounter
Conch-Horned Herald of the Sea, Son of the Deep · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is King Triton
Of the old gods of the salt deep, none is named so often by drowning sailors as the conch-horned herald, the son begotten of the sea's own sovereign. Where his father rules the abyssal courts, this one walks the tide-line between worlds, blowing his twisted shell to raise the swell or lull it flat. The ancients held that his horn could swell the waters to swallow whole fleets or part them into corridors of glass; that he could be coaxed to mercy with poured wine and the first catch of the morning, and roused to fury by an oath sworn falsely upon the waves. He answers to no landward crown. Fishermen leave him the silver of their nets at the harbour mouth, and reckon a calm crossing his blessing and a sudden squall his displeasure. To meet him is to stand before the ocean made flesh, crowned in foam, indifferent and immense, and to know that the sea has only ever loaned the shore its peace.
Run King Triton in Sixty Seconds
- Stage the water This whole fight runs on terrain. Put pools, a tide, or a flooded floor on the map before initiative; Sovereign of Tides and Undertow are dead rules on dry land.
- Open with the conch Lead with Conch Blast to knock the cluster prone and pushed, then Multiattack the most isolated target while they are scrambling back up.
- Kill-priority is mobility, then healers He wants enemies stuck in the water. Drop the caster who can teleport the party out, then the healer who undoes his burst.
- When bloodied He stops chasing and turtles: Surge every round to shove melee off, Riptide to reposition, and burn Legendary Resistance on the save-or-die.
- Three ways to run him Wrathful god (Conch Blast on cooldown, presses the front), aloof tidemaster (swaps and Undertows, never lets anyone reach him), or bargainer (parley mid-fight, calls off the sea if appeased).
King Triton
Large celestial (deity), chaotic neutral
CR 13 · 10,000 XP · GUIDELINEAmphibious. King Triton can breathe air and water.
Sovereign of Tides. Signature. The waters obey him. At the start of each of his turns, King Triton may swap the position of any two creatures within 60 ft. that are in or touching water, sliding them along the current; an unwilling creature makes a DC 17 Strength save to resist. Difficult terrain made of water does not cost him extra movement.
Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If King Triton fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.
Actions
Multiattack. King Triton makes two Trident attacks and uses Conch Blast if it is available.
Trident. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (3d8 + 6) piercing damage, plus 9 (2d8) cold damage. A creature struck while in water is also pushed 10 ft. away from King Triton.
Conch Blast (Recharge 5-6). King Triton sounds his conch horn and the sea answers. Each creature in a 60-foot cone makes a DC 17 Strength saving throw, taking 38 (7d8 + 7) bludgeoning damage and being knocked prone and pushed 20 ft. on a failure, or half damage with no other effect on a success.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Undertow (Reaction). When a creature King Triton can see within 60 ft. ends its turn in or adjacent to water, he can make it repeat a DC 17 Strength save or be pulled up to 15 ft. toward him and have its speed reduced to 0 until the start of its next turn.
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Trident Strike. King Triton makes one Trident attack.
Surge (Costs 2 Actions). A wave crests around King Triton. Each creature within 15 ft. makes a DC 17 Strength save or takes 13 (3d8) bludgeoning damage and is pushed 15 ft. away.
Riptide (Costs 2 Actions). King Triton swims up to his swim speed without provoking opportunity attacks, then may immediately use his Undertow reaction without spending a reaction.
A storm-browed sea-king rides a curling wall of living water, golden scale glinting at his shoulders and waist, a conch horn raised in one fist and the deep itself coiled obediently at his heel.
King Triton, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINELiving Current (signature). While within 30 ft. of the King Triton, allies have their swim speed equal to their walking speed and ignore difficult terrain made of water.
Actions
Brine Lash. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d6 + 6) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 15) by a coil of water.
Reactions
Drag Under. When a creature it has grappled tries to move away, the King Triton pulls it 10 ft. toward the nearest body of deep water instead.
A serpentine elemental of churning brine that swims at the sea-king's flank, herding foes into the reach of his trident.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Conch Blast to scatter the cluster, then wade in with the Trident on whoever is wettest. Kill-priority is the party caster; use Undertow to pin them off the water's edge. At this tier run him as a single dramatic miniboss with no companion.
Stay near water and use Sovereign of Tides to swap a melee threat away from the squishies, then Conch Blast the rest. Focus the healer first. Pair the Tidecaller companion alongside to grapple-drag the front line into trident reach.
Open by sounding the Conch Blast, then full Multiattack the most exposed striker. Spend legendary actions on Riptide to reposition and free-cast Undertow, locking down the party's mobility. When bloodied, lean on Surge each round to keep melee at bay and burn Legendary Resistance to outlast burst damage.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is King Triton?
His home statline is CR 13 (Tier 3, levels 11-15) with about 195 HP, AC 18, a +10 to hit, and a save DC of 17. Because he carries legendary actions he is solo-capable and plays up a band, so a party of four at level 12-13 will find him a genuine boss. Scaled-down Tier 1 (CR ~2) and Tier 2 (CR ~6) lines are provided for lower tables.
Can King Triton be a companion or ally?
As a sea-king deity he is built as an adversary and centerpiece boss, not a party member. If your story has him appeased or bargained with, run his bound elemental Tidecaller as the allied piece instead, or use his reduced Tier 1 line as a temporary divine patron who lends aid for a single scene before withdrawing to the deep.
Does King Triton have to fight in or near water?
He is far deadlier near water but not helpless without it. Sovereign of Tides, Undertow, and his trident's push only matter when water is on the field, so a dry battlefield strips much of his control. On land lean on Conch Blast, Surge, and raw Multiattack damage, and consider lowering his save DC by 1 to reflect the lost advantage.
