Lingxuzi — The Encounter

Spirit-Void Beast of the Sworn Mountain, all fang and rending claw · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Lingxuzi

Among the yaoguai that haunt the old pilgrim roads, Lingxuzi is named the Spirit-Void Beast, for those who meet its gaze upon the mountain are said to feel their courage simply empty out of them. It was once a lesser hill-spirit that fed on the offerings left at wayside shrines; denied them by a famine year, it gorged instead on travellers, and in feeding lost whatever gentleness it had owned. Now it claims a single peak as its hunting-sworn ground, prowling the switchbacks on all fours and rising to its full hunched height only to rend. Woodcutters speak of finding game and goats torn open and left uneaten, the kills made for the killing's sake. It hoards nothing, builds nothing, and remembers only the trick of the pounce and the pleasure of the tearing claw. Monks who pass that road chant loudly and travel by daylight, for the beast despises noise and will not descend into open sun.

Rending Frenzy. Signature. When Lingxuzi reduces a creature to 0 hit points or scores a critical hit with a claw, its long claws sink to the bone. The first time each turn it hits a creature with a claw, that creature can't regain hit points until the start of Lingxuzi's next turn as the wound is torn raggedly open.

Mountain Pounce. If Lingxuzi moves at least 20 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a claw on the same turn, the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Actions

Multiattack. Lingxuzi makes three attacks: two with its claws and one with its bite.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) slashing damage.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) piercing damage.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Savage Lunge (Reaction). When a creature within 10 feet of Lingxuzi makes an attack against an ally, Lingxuzi can make one claw attack against that creature, jealously claiming the kill for itself.

A hunched, shaggy horror frozen mid-pounce, its wolfish jaws flung wide to scream and its impossibly long claws spread to gut whatever crosses its mountain. Every line of the sculpt is built for the lunge.

Pack-Frenzy (signature). The cub has advantage on attack rolls against a creature if at least one of the cub's allies is within 5 feet of that creature and isn't incapacitated.

Actions

Raking Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d4 + 3) slashing damage.

Reactions

Yelp and Scatter. When hit by a melee attack, the cub can move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks, scrambling for its parent's shadow.

A half-grown beast still learning the lunge, all gangly limbs and oversized claws, it shadows the elder and harries whatever the elder leaves bleeding.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8 + 16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open by pouncing the squishiest body in reach to knock it prone, then full claw-bite. Kill-priority the healer, since Rending Frenzy locks down their patching. This downscaled version is a scary lone monster for a low party; pair it with goats-gone-feral or a single cub add.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC15HP15d10 + 45 (127) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open with Mountain Pounce on the front-line tank to drop it prone, then Multiattack so Rending Frenzy shuts off healing on whoever it bloodies. Kill-priority the cleric or bard. This is an add-on brute, not a boss: pair it with a bigger flagship threat or a pack of cubs and let it dive the back line while the boss holds center.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP23d10 + 92 (218) To-hit+9Save DC17

Open by pouncing the controller, prone, then tear. Use Savage Lunge every round to punish anyone trying to save an ally. Kill-priority concentration casters. At this tier it is the muscle beside a mountain-lord or sorcerer-king; let the caster lock the floor and send Lingxuzi to murder whoever escapes.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Lingxuzi?

Natively CR 6 (XP 2,300), a Tier 2 brute for level 5-10 parties. The record also gives a downscaled CR ~2 build for Tier 1 and an upscaled CR ~11 build for Tier 3 using the same traits and actions, only the numbers move.

Can Lingxuzi be a companion or ally?

As written it is a feral monstrosity that hoards nothing and obeys no one, so a straight alliance is a stretch. A druid, ranger, or beast-binder could leash it with a Cub of the Sworn Peak (the included companion, AC 13, 38 HP) as the more plausible bonded version.

Why doesn't Lingxuzi have legendary actions?

It is designed as an add-on threat, not a solo centerpiece. Drop it next to a flagship boss and let it dive the back line. If you need it to anchor a fight alone, run the Tier 3 build and give it the master's lair as cover.
