Loki
Loki — The Encounter
Sky-Walker, Sly One, the bound father of monsters and lies · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Loki
Among the bindings of the old sky-court there is a name the runes record only sidelong: the Sly One, sky-walker and shape-thief, father to a wolf, a serpent, and a half-dead daughter. By blood he is of the frost-giants, by oath a brother to the gods, and by nature loyal to neither. The Bileblight is his slow revenge: a creeping rot he seeds in mead, in wounds, in the trust between sworn allies, so that the strong turn on the strong while he watches and laughs. He keeps no fortress and holds no host, for his weapons are the doubt he plants and the masks he wears. Skalds warn that to bargain with him is to lose, that to trust his shape is to be undone, and that even chained beneath the venom-drip he schemes the breaking of the world. Where his green-eyed regalia gleams, brothers draw blades on brothers and call it justice.
Run Loki in Sixty Seconds
- Hold for the lie. Loki's whole kit is turning the party against itself. Open with Liesmith's Tongue or Sow Discord every round before you ever swing a blade.
- Kill-priority is the healer. Blight Bolt stops hit-point regain on hit, so spear the cleric to keep the no-heal lock running while Bileblade poison stacks up.
- When bloodied, vanish. Spend It Was Never Me and Slip Away to break line of sight, throw an illusory double, and reset the fight from range.
- Three ways to run him: as a SOLO at T3 (lean on legendary Sow Discord and Trickster's Step), as a manipulator behind a giant or undead host (he buffs chaos, they hit), or as a face-villain in disguise (Shapechanger) the party only learns is Loki when the knives come out.
- Never fight fair. If a plan would cost him his life, he flees in another shape and the Bileblight festers for the next session.
Loki
Medium fiend (shapechanger), chaotic evil
CR 11 · 7,200 XP · GUIDELINEShapechanger. Loki can use his action to polymorph into a Small or Medium humanoid or beast he has seen, or back into his true form. His statistics are the same in each form. Any equipment he is wearing or carrying melds into the new form. He reverts to his true form if he dies.
Liesmith's Tongue. Signature. Once per turn when a creature Loki can see ends its turn within 30 feet of him, he may force it to make a DC 17 Wisdom save or believe a single false impression of his choosing (an ally is an enemy, the floor is safe, a wound was healed) until the end of its next turn. A creature that takes damage from a source it did not expect ends the effect.
Magic Resistance. Loki has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Actions
Multiattack. Loki makes two Bileblade attacks, or casts a spell and makes one Bileblade attack.
Bileblade. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+5) slashing damage plus 9 (2d8) poison damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution save or be poisoned until the end of its next turn.
Blight Bolt. Ranged Spell Attack: +10 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (4d8+4) necrotic damage, and the target cannot regain hit points until the start of Loki's next turn.
Seething Deceit (Recharge 5-6). Loki weaves a glamour of writhing falsehoods in a 30-foot cone. Each creature there must make a DC 17 Charisma save. On a failure a creature takes 27 (6d8) psychic damage and is frightened of Loki until the end of its next turn; on a success it takes half damage and is not frightened.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Slip Away (Bonus Action). Loki teleports up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space he can see and gains advantage on the next save he makes before the start of his next turn.
It Was Never Me (Reaction). When Loki is hit by an attack, he may turn the blow on an illusory double: the attack instead hits a duplicate that vanishes, and Loki teleports up to 15 feet. He can do this once between his turns.
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Cantrip. Loki casts a cantrip or makes one Blight Bolt attack.
Trickster's Step (Costs 1 Action). Loki moves up to his speed without provoking opportunity attacks and may swap places with one willing creature within 5 feet of his destination.
Sow Discord (Costs 2 Actions). Loki targets one creature within 60 feet that must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom save or use its reaction, if available, to make one weapon attack against a creature of Loki's choice that it can reach.
A horned, gold-helmed figure with bare painted torso and a wind-thrown teal cape, gauntlets and loin-plate set with green eyes that never blink. Every surface watches; every smile is a wager.
Loki, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEHunger Unleashed (signature). While below half its hit points, the whelp's bite deals an extra 7 (2d6) damage and it has advantage on attacks against any creature already grappled or prone.
Actions
Rending Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d10+6) piercing damage, and if the target is a creature it must succeed on a DC 15 Strength save or be knocked prone.
Reactions
Snap the Faithless. When a creature within 5 feet of the whelp fails a save caused by Loki, the whelp makes one Rending Bite against it.
A grey-furred wolf-pup the size of a warhorse, gold chains biting into its neck, born of the trickster and raised on lies. It strikes hardest at those its sire has already turned.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Liesmith's Tongue to send the party's frontline swinging at each other, then peel off with Slip Away. Keep at range with Blight Bolt and never stand still. Kill-priority is the healer (Blight Bolt's no-heal rider), and a Fenris-Whelp turns one isolated PC into a problem.
Lead with Seething Deceit on the clustered casters, then Sow Discord to make the tank attack an ally. Use It Was Never Me to shrug the first big hit and reposition. When bloodied, lean on illusions and the whelp to stall while Blight Bolt locks down healing.
Run him as a solo: open with Liesmith's Tongue, spend legendary actions on Sow Discord every round to keep the party fighting itself, and Trickster's Step out of melee. Seething Deceit when two or more cluster. Save It Was Never Me for the rogue's crit. He fights to win, not to die honestly.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Loki?
Loki is built at CR 11 (7,200 XP) in his native Tier 3 form for parties of levels 11-15, as a solo-capable boss whose legendary actions let him play up. Scaled stat lines are provided for Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and Tier 2 (levels 5-10) so you can drop him into any campaign.
Can Loki be a companion or ally?
Almost never willingly, and never safely. Loki serves only Loki; any alliance is a setup. If your story demands a temporary truce, treat his aid as a debt that will be called in at the worst possible moment. The Fenris-Whelp companion is the closer thing to a loyal asset, and even it answers to him.
Is the Bileblight a curse or a disease?
Both, by design. Treat it narratively as a creeping rot Loki seeds in trust and in wounds, mechanically reflected in his poison Bileblade and the no-healing rider on Blight Bolt. A remove curse or greater restoration can lift its lingering effects between fights, but only ending Loki ends the source.
