Mari
Mari — The Encounter
Crowned Lady of the Mountain, serpent-girt and storm-tongued · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Mari
In the high crags of the old country she is simply called the Lady, dwelling in cavern and peak, ferried between summits as a streak of fire across the night sky. The mountain folk reckon her by the weather: when she travels by storm, hold fast indoors; when she rides as a flaming sickle low over the ridges, drought follows. She abides no falsehood, no theft, no broken oath, and no boast of pride, for these she repays with hail, with rotted harvest, with the loss of all a liar holds dear. Her consort is the serpent of the deeps, and the two are seen entwined upon her throne of cloud. Shepherds leave coins and bread at her cave-mouths and address her only with the back turned away, never pointing, never naming her wants aloud. She is neither cruel nor kind, but exact, weighing each soul as the mountain weighs the falling snow.
Run Mari in Sixty Seconds
- Hold the serpent first Sugaar's Coil and Cover redirects melee hits onto itself—Mari is untouchable in melee until the snake drops, so make ranged attackers your answer or break the grapple it lands.
- Open with weather If there's open sky, lead with call lightning (or control weather at high tier); on turn one, Storm-Lash the tank to knock it prone and split the party's positioning.
- Kill-priority She targets healers and big damage-dealers with Withering Gaze—hold that gaze for the moment the party clumps, then frighten and burn the squishiest caster.
- When bloodied She takes to the air with Ride the Wind, hovering out of melee and raining call lightning; bring her down with ranged fire or readied actions before she resets distance.
- Three ways to run her Storm-witch (lightning + knockdown control), serpent-guarded enchantress (deny melee, demand ranged answers), or exacting judge (she spares the honest, smites the liar—roleplay her as a moral weigher, not a brute).
Mari
Medium celestial, neutral
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINELady of Weather. Mari is wreathed in the storms of the mountain. The first time she is hit by an attack on each of her turns, the attacker takes 9 (2d8) lightning damage. While she is in clear sky or open air, she has advantage on Dexterity saving throws.
Serpent-Girt. A great serpent coils about Mari's body, striking at any who close with her. While the serpent companion is within 5 ft. of her, Mari cannot be flanked and gains a +1 bonus to AC (included).
Innate Spellcasting. Mari's spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 14, +6 to hit). She can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components: At will: gust of wind, sacred flame. 3/day each: call lightning, sleet storm. 1/day each: control weather, insect plague.
Actions
Multiattack. Mari makes two Storm-Lash attacks, or casts one spell and makes one Storm-Lash attack.
Storm-Lash. Melee Spell Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d8 + 5) lightning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone by the gale.
Withering Gaze (Recharge 5–6). Mari fixes a creature she can see within 30 ft. with her crowned stare. The target must make a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw, taking 31 (7d8) psychic damage on a failed save and being frightened until the end of its next turn, or half as much damage and not frightened on a success.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Ride the Wind. Bonus Action. Mari moves up to her flying speed without provoking opportunity attacks, leaving a trail of crackling air; the first creature to enter that space before her next turn takes 5 (1d10) lightning damage.
A red-haired lady in flowing crimson stands serene beneath a golden gothic arch, a vast serpent coiled lovingly about her body, her crown glinting like a thunderhead at dawn.
Mari, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEConstrictor's Embrace (signature). When Mari grapples a creature (escape DC 14), that creature is also restrained and takes 7 (2d6) bludgeoning damage at the start of each of its turns until the grapple ends.
Actions
Venom Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d8 + 5) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) poison damage.
Reactions
Coil and Cover. When Mari within 5 ft. is hit by a melee attack, Mari interposes its coils; the attack instead targets Mari.
The serpent of the deeps, Mari's eternal consort, coils about her as living armor and strikes at any who dare draw near.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with sacred flame from range and keep the serpent between Mari and the front line. If foes cluster on a slope or in a corridor, drop a gust of wind to scatter and shove them off ledges. Kill-priority her last—the serpent is the wall you must break first; pair her with a heavier melee threat to hold the line.
Open with call lightning if there's sky overhead, then Storm-Lash to knock the tank prone. Save Withering Gaze for the party's biggest damage-dealer the moment they group up. She is the controller piece—pair her with a brute boss; the serpent soaks hits via Coil and Cover, so focus-fire Sugaar before you can pressure Mari.
Lead with control weather to turn the battlefield against melee, then alternate insect plague and Storm-Lash to break formations. Withering Gaze the healer or summoner first. Use Ride the Wind to stay airborne and out of reach; pair her with a flying flagship so the party can never safely focus either threat.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Mari?
Mari is built at CR 6 (2,300 XP) on her native Tier 2 sheet, a centerpiece for level 5–10 parties. Tier 1 (levels 1–4) and Tier 3 (levels 11–15) variants are provided—the traits and tactics are identical; only AC, HP, to-hit, save DC, and damage shift to match the band.
Can Mari be a companion or ally?
Yes. As an exacting weather-goddess of the mountains, Mari makes a striking patron or temporary ally for a party that keeps its oaths and tells no lies—she rewards the honest with fair weather and clear roads. Run her as a quest-giver or a one-encounter ally who departs the moment a promise is broken; her serpent consort Sugaar stays at her side throughout.
Is Mari a solo boss?
No—she has no legendary actions, so she is an add-on controller rather than a standalone finale. She shines paired with a heavier melee or flying flagship: Mari controls the field with lightning and weather while the bigger threat applies the pressure. Focus-fire her serpent Sugaar first, or her melee defenses will frustrate the whole party.
