Maui
Maui — The Encounter
Trickster demigod who fished up islands and snared the sun · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Maui
He is named in every island's chant: the last-born thrown to the tide and woven back to life in his mother's hair, who grew to wrestle the world into shape. With the enchanted jawbone of his grandmother he beat the sun until it crawled slow across the sky, so that men might have hours enough to fish and to feast. With a hook barbed from that same sacred bone he cast into the deep and hauled up the lands themselves, the islands still raw and trembling as his brothers hacked at them in greed. He stole fire from the fingernails of the fire-keeper and gave its secret to mortals. No fetter holds him, no flame burns him, no boast goes unanswered. Yet the chant warns that pride is the demigod's hook in his own jaw: he overreaches, he is caught, he laughs even as the trap closes. Summon him as ally or obstacle, and know he plays to win.
Run Maui in Sixty Seconds
- He plays to win Maui is a chaotic-good demigod hero, not a monster to slaughter on sight. Open by deciding whether he's an ally, an obstacle, or a duel of pride; he taunts before he kills.
- First-hit crit Trickster's Cunning makes his FIRST attack on any creature an auto-crit, so he front-loads burst. Don't let him soften a fresh target unanswered, and remember a downed PC can't be healed until end of his next turn.
- Open with the hook Lead with Fish-Hook of Heaven to grapple and haul the backline caster into his stun-club range, isolating them from the party.
- When bloodied He uses Island-Hauler's Step (legendary) to dart into water or onto raised earth and heal, and he burns Snare the Sun on the cluster. Cut him off from water to deny the heal.
- Three ways to run him As a flagship solo boss (native tier 3, use all legendary actions); as a rival hero who duels the party champion and yields when bloodied; or as a reluctant ally whose pride endangers the mission.
Maui
Medium humanoid (demigod), chaotic good
CR 11 · 7,200 XP · GUIDELINEDemigod Resilience. Maui has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects, and he cannot be frightened.
Trickster's Cunning. Signature. Once per turn, when Maui hits a creature he has not yet struck this combat, the attack is treated as a critical hit. He has also stolen the secrets of fire and snared the sun: he ignores resistance to fire damage, and a creature he reduces to 0 hit points cannot regain hit points until the end of Maui's next turn.
Actions
Multiattack. Maui makes three attacks: two with his Magic Jawbone and one with his Fish-Hook of Heaven.
Magic Jawbone. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (3d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn.
Fish-Hook of Heaven. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft. or range 30/60 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 6) piercing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 16). On his next turn, Maui can use a bonus action to haul a grappled creature up to 20 feet toward him.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Snare the Sun (Recharge 5-6). As a bonus action, Maui lashes a blazing cord across a 30-foot line. Each creature in the line takes 18 (4d8) fire damage and has its speed halved until the end of its next turn (DC 16 Dexterity save halves the damage and negates the slow).
Demigod's Defiance. Reaction. When Maui fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead. He can use this once per day.
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Hook Cast. Maui makes one Fish-Hook of Heaven attack.
Island-Hauler's Step (Costs 1 Action). Maui moves up to his speed without provoking opportunity attacks. If he ends in water or atop raised earth, he regains 10 hit points.
Mocking Laugh (Costs 2 Actions). Maui taunts a creature he can see within 30 feet. It must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or attack only Maui, with disadvantage, until the end of its next turn.
A broad-shouldered demigod stands atop a fresh island torn dripping from the sea, the magic jawbone of his ancestor raised in one fist and the great hooked bone of heaven coiled at his side, a feather cloak draped across one bronzed shoulder.
Maui, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINETide-Reader (signature). While within 30 feet of the gull, allies have advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks made on or near water and cannot be surprised while at sea.
Actions
Raking Dive. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) slashing damage, and the gull can fly up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Reactions
Warning Cry. When an ally within 30 feet is targeted by an attack, the gull shrieks; the attacker has disadvantage on that attack roll.
A storm-grey seabird sworn to the demigod's line, circling ahead to read the currents and screaming when death comes off the water.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open by hauling the squishiest target into melee with the Fish-Hook, then stun-lock it with the Jawbone. At this tier drop the band hard: he is a legendary mortal hero, not a god. Kill-priority is the grappled target; pair him with raiders or a sea-monster so the party can't simply dogpile him.
Lead with Snare the Sun to slow the clustered melee, then Multiattack the slowed front-liner and crit them via Trickster's Cunning on the first hit. When bloodied, use Island-Hauler's Step to reposition near water and heal. Pairs well with a single ocean elemental.
Home tier, run him solo. Open by stunning the heaviest hitter with the Jawbone, then spend legendary actions on Hook Cast and Mocking Laugh to force the party to fight him on his terms. Save Demigod's Defiance for the round you'd be hard-CC'd; when bloodied, Step into water to heal and reset Snare the Sun.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Maui?
Native CR 11 (Tier 3, ~level 11-15), and he is solo_capable: legendary actions plus Demigod's Defiance let him headline an encounter alone. Drop to the Tier 1 or Tier 2 line for lower-level parties; the traits stay identical and only the numbers move.
Can Maui be a companion or ally?
Yes. He's chaotic good and famous as a culture-hero, so he makes a natural temporary ally or duel-then-recruit rival. Use the Tier 1 line if he fights beside a low-level party, and lean on Mocking Laugh and the Fish-Hook grapple to control the battlefield without overshadowing the PCs.
Is Maui safe to publish without IP concerns?
Yes. Maui is a public-domain Polynesian/Maori mythological demigod, attested across centuries of island oral tradition. This stat block is built entirely on that folklore and SRD 5.1 mechanics, with no proprietary cosmology or trademarked content.
