Mayari — The Encounter

One-Eyed Goddess of the Moon, who lost an eye to her brother · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Mayari

In the old Tagalog telling, the world once had no night, only the unbroken glare of two siblings who shared the sky. Mayari, fairest and proudest of the children of Bathala, quarreled with her brother Apolaki for the right to rule the heavens, and they fought with bamboo cudgels until a single blow struck out one of her eyes. Seeing the harm done, the two made peace and agreed to rule in turn, he by day and she by night. Yet her remaining eye is no weaker for the loss, and her light is gentler precisely because she knows the cost of pride. Mountain folk leave her offerings of rice and silver where the bamboo grows thick, for it was among such groves that her duel was fought. She walks the dark with a spear cut from that same bamboo, blessing honest hunters and turning her one cold gaze upon shapechangers and thieves who mistake her quiet for weakness.

Moonlit Sight. Mayari sees through her single remaining eye without flaw. She has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight, cannot be surprised while she can see, and ignores the effects of dim light and darkness on her own vision and attacks.

Waxing and Waning. Signature. Mayari channels the phases of the moon. At the start of each of her turns she chooses Waxing (her attacks deal an extra 7 (2d6) radiant damage until her next turn) or Waning (until her next turn, the first attack that hits her each round deals half damage as her form thins to silver light).

Actions

Multiattack. Mayari makes two attacks with her Lunar Spear, or casts a spell and makes one Lunar Spear attack.

Lunar Spear. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) radiant damage. The spear returns to her hand at the end of the turn.

Moonbeam (Recharge 5-6). Mayari calls down a silver shaft of light in a 5-foot-radius, 40-foot-high cylinder within 60 feet. Each creature in the area must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw, taking 22 (4d10) radiant damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. A shapechanger makes its save with disadvantage and reverts to its true form on a failure.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Step of Tides (Bonus Action). Mayari moves up to 20 feet without provoking opportunity attacks, leaving a trail of moonlight that lingers until her next turn.

Silver Ward (Reaction). When a creature she can see within 30 feet is hit by an attack, Mayari interposes a curtain of moonlight, reducing the damage by 9 (2d8). The triggering creature can then move 5 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.

A serene, one-eyed goddess stands amid a cathedral of tall bamboo, draped in a flowing cloak over a skirt scrolled with silver moon-patterns, a long spear of pale wood held ready in her steady hand.

Morning Star Light (signature). Mayari, spirit of the evening star, sheds dim light in a 20-foot radius. Allies within this light add 1d4 to saving throws against being blinded, charmed, or frightened.

Actions

Starlance. Ranged Spell Attack: +6 to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (3d6+4) radiant damage, and the target sheds dim light and cannot benefit from being invisible until the start of Mayari's next turn.

Reactions

Vanishing Twilight. When Mayari or an ally within 15 feet is hit by an attack, Mayari scatters into starlight, granting the target resistance to that attack's damage and the ability to teleport up to 15 feet.

Where Mayari walks, the evening star Mayari drifts at her shoulder, a small bright spirit that lights the road home for travelers caught by the dark.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open Waxing and hurl the Lunar Spear from 30+ feet, kiting with Step of Tides so melee parties never pin her. Save Moonbeam for two or more clustered foes. She is a skirmisher here, not a boss, pair her with a tougher melee threat to hold the front while she pelts from the moonlight.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP16d8+48 (120) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open with Moonbeam on the tightest cluster, choosing Waxing, then Multiattack the party's healer or shapechanger. Spend Silver Ward to protect a flagship boss, this is the support piece, not the centerpiece. Switch to Waning when focus-fired, and Step of Tides to keep ranged. Kill-priority: the spellcaster, then her.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP24d8+96 (204) To-hit+9Save DC17

Pair her with a bigger threat she can buff and shield. Lead Moonbeam (now devastating) on clustered casters, then Multiattack with Waxing radiant riders. Burn Silver Ward and Step of Tides liberally to keep the real boss alive. When bloodied, go full Waning and reposition behind cover, kill-priority remains the party's nuker.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Mayari?

Her native build is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a level 5-10 party. Use the tier table to drop her to roughly CR 2 for low-level play or push her to about CR 11 for a high-tier fight, the traits stay the same and only the numbers shift.

Can Mayari be a companion or ally?

Yes. As a neutral good lunar goddess she makes a natural patron or guide for night-faring heroes. As an ally she favors Silver Ward and Moonbeam support over front-line brawling, and her bound star-spirit Tala adds light, anti-stealth, and radiant burst.

Is Mayari a solo boss?

No. She has no legendary actions, so a full party will outpace a lone Mayari in one or two rounds. Run her as a high-value support piece beside a flagship adversary, she buffs, shields, and snipes while the heavy threat holds the line.
