Metatron — The Encounter

Prince of the Presence, Scribe of Heaven, Lesser Crown · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Metatron

In the older books he is the youth turned fire, Enoch who walked with the Almighty until he walked no more among men but was taken up and remade as the Prince of the Presence. They call him the Lesser Crown, for his name carries the numeric weight of the Throne itself, and the keeper of the secret tongue in which Creation was first spoken. He is the scribe who records every deed beneath the firmament and the herald who carries the divine voice to those who cannot bear to hear it unveiled. Where he stands, the air bends into a column of wind and the ground forgets its shadows. Mortals who behold him whole are unmade not by malice but by glory, the way frost is unmade by the sun. He answers no summons of greed and bargains with no flame; he comes only when a name must be written, or struck, from the great ledger of the world.

Angelic Weapons. Metatron's weapon attacks are magical. When he hits with the Lance of Light, the attack deals an extra 18 (4d8) radiant damage (included below).

Crown of Forty-Nine Names. Signature. Metatron is the celestial scribe who knows the secret names of all things. When a creature he can see within 60 ft. starts its turn, he may speak its true name; that creature must succeed on a DC 17 Charisma save or be unable to take reactions and have disadvantage on attack rolls and saves until the start of its next turn. He can name one creature per round.

Magic Resistance. Metatron has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Actions

Multiattack. Metatron makes two attacks with the Lance of Light.

Lance of Light. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft. or range 30/120 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) piercing damage plus 18 (4d8) radiant damage.

Pillar of Glory (Recharge 5-6). A shaft of searing light falls in a 10-ft.-radius, 60-ft.-high cylinder centered on a point Metatron can see within 90 ft. Each creature in the area makes a DC 17 Dexterity save, taking 45 (10d8) radiant damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. A creature reduced to 0 hp by this effect is disintegrated into ash.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Wings of the Throne. Reaction. When a creature Metatron can see within 30 ft. hits a target with an attack, he may impose disadvantage on that attack roll as his six wings flare into a blinding curtain of light.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Lance Strike. Metatron makes one Lance of Light attack.

Soaring Step (Costs 1 Action). Metatron flies up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Speak a Name (Costs 2 Actions). Metatron names a creature he can see within 60 ft. It must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom save or take 16 (3d10) radiant damage and be blinded until the end of its next turn.

A six-winged seraph sheathed in mirror-bright plate, lifting a crowned lance of pure light above a rising spiral of holy wind. He does not descend so much as the world rises to meet him.

Weaver of Prayers (signature). At the start of each of its turns, one ally within 30 ft. of Metatron gains 10 temporary hit points as their pleas are braided into a shield of light.

Actions

Censer Chain. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) radiant damage, and the target is dazzled (disadvantage on its next attack) until the end of its turn.

Reactions

Intercede. When an ally within 10 ft. is hit, Metatron can take half the damage in their stead.

The shorter, broader-winged of the two heralds, wreathed in incense smoke and chained censers, who lifts the prayers of the faithful to the lance-bearer above.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP11d8 (49) To-hit+4Save DC13

Scale Metatron down only as a divine herald or vision, never a slugfest. Open with Crown of Forty-Nine Names on the loudest attacker, then Lance of Light at range so a single party cannot dogpile him. Treat Pillar of Glory as a once-per-fight 'do not cluster' threat.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP14d10+42 (119) To-hit+7Save DC15

Stay airborne (fly 90, hover) and pick off whoever ignores cover. Name the party's best save-or-suck caster first with the Crown, then Pillar of Glory the moment two or more bunch up. Use Wings of the Throne to blunt the rogue's big hit.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP18d10+108 (207) To-hit+9Save DC17

Run him as a true solo: hover at 60+ ft., open with the Crown on the controller, then alternate Lance multiattacks and Pillar of Glory on recharge. Spend legendary actions on Soaring Step to stay out of melee and Speak a Name to punish the front line. Kill-priority is anyone who can ground him.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Metatron?

Native CR 13 (about 10,000 XP) as a Tier 3 solo boss. Because his legendary actions let him punch above his sheet, the stat block is built one band down from a raw CR 15 and plays best against a party of 11th-15th level. Scaled-down Tier 1 and Tier 2 versions are provided for heralds and visions.

Can Metatron be a companion or ally?

Not as a follower; he is a setpiece, not a hireling. But his bound herald, Sandalphon the Twin Herald (AC 16, 124 HP), is built to fight beside the party, shielding allies with woven prayers and interceding to take their blows. Use Metatron himself only as a brief, awe-inspiring intervention if the story demands divine aid.

Is Metatron a devil or a demon?

Neither. He is a celestial (the highest of angels in Merkabah and Enochic mysticism), built around radiant damage, truesight, and the secret names of Creation. He is lawful good and immune to being charmed or frightened, so he cannot be bargained with the way an infernal spirit can.
