Mithra
Mithra — The Encounter
Yazata of the covenant, sun-judge who lets no oath go unwitnessed · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Mithra
Set down in the oldest hymns of the fire-priests, Mithra is the yazata of the covenant, the unsleeping eye who rides before the dawn with a thousand ears and ten thousand watchers. He was set over the mortal world to witness every bargain struck and every promise sworn, and no liar passes beneath his gaze unmarked. Where he raises his axe the night recoils, for he is the sworn enemy of the deceiver-god of darkness and burns away the lie as the sun burns away the mist. Cattle-herders called on him at the boundary stones; kings swore their treaties in his name, knowing the oathbreaker would find his fields blighted and his enemies bold. He is generous to the faithful and pitiless to the false, and when he descends in wrath he comes wreathed in flame, scattering the hosts of the lie before a single drawn breath of the morning.
Run Mithra in Sixty Seconds
- Hold the aura on: Sunbright Aura is always running — undead, fiends, and oathbreakers take 5 radiant every turn they start near him, so it punishes clustering for free.
- Open with Searing Verdict: drop the 20-foot sunfire cylinder on the tightest knot; oathbreakers and anyone in magical darkness auto-fail, so it rewards reading the party first.
- Kill-priority — the liar: Witness of Oaths gives disadvantage on saves to whoever broke an oath in the last day; lean on that creature with every save effect.
- When bloodied, go airborne: use Soaring Judgment and fly speed to dive, strike, and retreat so melee can't pin the sun-god down.
- Three ways to run him: radiant artillery (lead Searing Verdict + Verdict-style flares), a diving skirmisher (Soaring Judgment every legendary window), or a stoic guardian who shields allies with Sun-Sealed Ward.
Mithra
Large celestial, lawful good
CR 11 · 7,200 XP · GUIDELINEWitness of Oaths. Mithra automatically knows if a creature he can see is lying or has broken a sworn agreement. A creature that has broken an oath in the last day has disadvantage on saving throws against Mithra's abilities, as the sun-judge sees through every shadow it would hide behind.
Sunbright Aura. Mithra sheds bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet. A creature that starts its turn within the bright light and is an undead, fiend, or oathbreaker takes 5 radiant damage.
Magic Weapons. Mithra's weapon attacks are magical.
Actions
Multiattack. Mithra makes two attacks with his Solar Axe.
Solar Axe. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+5) slashing damage plus 9 (2d8) radiant damage.
Searing Verdict (Recharge 5-6). Mithra raises his axe and a column of judging sunfire falls in a 20-foot-radius, 40-foot-high cylinder centered on a point he can see within 60 feet. Each creature in the area must make a DC 17 Dexterity saving throw, taking 36 (8d8) radiant damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. Oathbreakers and creatures hidden in magical darkness automatically fail this save.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Sun-Sealed Ward (Reaction). When a creature Mithra can see within 30 feet makes an attack, Mithra interposes his warded shield, granting himself or an ally he can see +4 AC against that attack. If the attack still hits an ally, Mithra reduces the damage by 13 (3d8).
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Strike. Mithra makes one Solar Axe attack.
Blinding Flare (Costs 2 Actions). Mithra flares his aura. Each creature within 15 feet must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of its next turn.
Soaring Judgment (Costs 2 Actions). Mithra flies up to half his fly speed without provoking opportunity attacks and may make one Solar Axe attack against a creature he passes.
Cast as a haloed warrior-god leaping from a radiant sun-disc, Mithra brandishes a flaming war-axe and an ornamented ward as flames coil around his throne of light.
Mithra, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEEver-Watchful (signature). Mithra cannot be surprised and has advantage on saving throws against being blinded or charmed. While within 30 feet of Mithra, it adds 1d4 radiant damage to its attacks.
Actions
Radiant Spear. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) radiant damage.
Reactions
Shielding Light. When an ally within 10 feet is hit by an attack, Mithra interposes its light, reducing the damage by 1d8.
A lesser sun-watcher bound to Mithra's covenant, Mithra circles the field as a spear-bright herald, marking liars for the god's judgment.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Sunbright Aura lit and Searing Verdict on the tightest cluster; at this scale he is a daunting set-piece deity. Kill-priority is whoever broke an oath — Witness of Oaths hands you free disadvantage. Pair him with a single sun-watcher escort so the party feels outmatched without a full god's wrath.
Lead with Soaring Judgment to dive past defenders onto the cleric or warlock, then Searing Verdict the backline. Hold Sun-Sealed Ward for the rogue's first big hit. When bloodied, fly up and rain Blinding Flare to break melee — keep him airborne and untouchable.
Solo boss: open Searing Verdict on the cluster, Multiattack the frontline, then spend legendary actions on Soaring Judgment to harass casters every round. Kill-priority is any oathbreaker (auto-fail saves) and concentration casters. When bloodied, alternate Blinding Flare and flight so the party never lands two full turns of focus fire.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Mithra?
Mithra is built at CR 11 (7,200 XP) in his native Tier 3 form. Because he is a true solo boss with legendary actions, his sheet is dropped one band — legendary actions let him play up one to two CR against a full party. Tier 1 and Tier 2 versions rescale his numbers down for lower-level tables.
Can Mithra be a companion or ally?
As a sun-god yazata he is a daunting patron rather than a follower, but he can absolutely fight beside a righteous party — his Sun-Sealed Ward and Sunbright Aura make him a powerful guardian. For a true sidekick, use Verethra, his Bound Watcher, who is sized to support without overshadowing the heroes.
Is Mithra a devil or a fiend?
No — Mithra is a celestial. He is the Zoroastrian yazata of the covenant, sun, and justice, the sworn enemy of darkness. Stat him as a lawful good celestial with radiant and fire themes; his foes are oathbreakers, undead, and fiends, not his kin.
