Moon — The Encounter

Feathered serpent of the pale moon-shrine, oracle of tides · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Moon

The feathered serpents are reckoned among the oldest of the sky-powers, born where moonlight first touched still water and learned to ripple. This one keeps a shrine of pale moonstone, and the tides answer to its breath: when it floods, the floor runs to brine and silt; when it ebbs, its wounds close like sand smoothing over a footprint. Petitioners climb to the shrine at the dark of the moon to read fortunes in the serpent's coils, for it remembers every tide that ever rose and can speak the shape of the next. It does not hunger as beasts hunger, nor hate as the fallen hate; it weighs the balance of water and light and keeps it, and any who break the rhythm of its shrine, by greed or by violence, find the tide turned against them. To win its favor one brings a true secret, freely given, and asks only what the moon already knows.

Lunar Tides (signature). The moon-shrine ebbs and floods around the serpent. At the start of each of the serpent's turns, choose flood or ebb. During flood, the ground within 20 feet is difficult terrain for creatures other than the serpent. During ebb, the serpent regains 5 hit points if it is below half its maximum hit points.

Moonlit Coils. A creature that starts its turn within 5 feet of the serpent must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its turn, dazzled by the shrine's pale light.

Actions

Multiattack. The serpent makes one Bite attack and one Constrict attack.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) cold damage.

Constrict. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one Large or smaller target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 14). Until the grapple ends, the target is restrained and the serpent cannot constrict another target.

Tide Pull (Recharge 5-6). The serpent calls a surge of lunar tide in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a DC 14 Strength saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) cold damage and being pulled 10 feet toward the serpent on a failure, or half as much damage and no pull on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Riptide Recoil (reaction). When a creature the serpent can see ends its movement within 10 feet of it, the serpent slides that creature 5 feet in any direction along the ground.

A great feathered serpent rears above a crystalline moon-shrine, its horned head crowned in pale plumes, its scaled coils spilling down a lattice of blue moonstone marked with the sign of the Moon.

Moonlit Step (signature). The wisp and one ally within 5 feet can swap places as part of the wisp's move without provoking opportunity attacks.

Actions

Brine Lash. Melee Spell Attack: +5 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6+3) cold damage.

Reactions

Ebbing Veil. When an ally within 10 feet is hit by an attack, the wisp grants that ally resistance to the triggering damage.

A drifting ribbon of moonlit spray broken from the serpent's tide, it shields those the oracle has judged worthy.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open with Tide Pull to scatter a clustered party, then Constrict the strongest melee fighter to pin it away from the squishy backline. Kill-priority is whoever stands in the shrine to loot it. Pair it with a bigger threat; this is the guardian piece, not the boss.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP15d10+45 (127) To-hit+6Save DC14

Open in flood to wreck enemy footing, then Multiattack the front-liner and grapple it with Constrict. Save Tide Pull for when two or more PCs cluster in the cone. When bloodied, switch to ebb to heal and stall while allies close. Pairs with a caster boss as the bodyguard that drags strikers off the back line.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d10+80 (190) To-hit+8Save DC16

Lead with Tide Pull to yank ranged attackers into bite range, then Constrict and chew on the grappled target each turn. Use Riptide Recoil to reposition flankers into your allies' threat. Kill-priority is the party's healer; it is an add-on enforcer, so let a flagship caster control the room while it isolates and pins.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Moon?

Its home tier is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a party of levels 5-10. Scaled stat lines for tiers 1 (CR ~2) and 3 (CR ~11) are provided so you can drop it into lower or higher games without rebuilding it.

Can Moon be a companion or ally?

Yes. As a lawful, judging sky-power it allies with parties who bring it a freely given secret or who defend its shrine. Use the bound Pale Tide-Wisp as a lighter allied stat block, or run the serpent itself as a temporary patron that grants tide control in one set-piece fight.

Is Moon a solo boss?

No. It has no legendary actions, so a full party will action-economy it down in a straight fight. Run it as the centerpiece guardian of a tide encounter, or pair it with a flagship caster boss where it isolates and pins strikers while the boss controls the room.
