Nakhtet — The Encounter

Bat-headed sentinel of the wrapped dead, screamer in the tomb-dark · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Nakhtet

When the embalmers of the Nile sealed a holy vault, they bound a chosen servant in the wrappings of the dead with ears left bare, that he might hear the thief before he saw the lamp. Nakhtet is such a one: the Screamer in the Linen, whose bat-keen ears catch a sandal scuffed three chambers away. The gold collar at his throat marks the temple he died defending, and the curse-formula spoken over his body bound his spirit to the threshold for as long as the gilding holds. By day he is a statue of bound flesh; by the cold of night he prowls the columned dark, and his cry shatters jars, ears, and nerve alike. Robbers who survived swear the sound came from every wall at once, that they could not tell which black archway hid the thing, only that it was already behind them. He does not pursue beyond the temple bounds. He does not need to. The desert and the dark finish what his claws begin.

Tomb Sentinel. Nakhtet has advantage on attack rolls against any creature that has moved on its turn since the start of Nakhtet's last turn. It does not need to see such a creature to gain this benefit, relying on the echo of footfalls in the dark.

Undead Fortitude. If damage reduces Nakhtet to 0 hit points, it makes a Constitution saving throw with a DC of 5 + the damage taken, unless the damage is radiant or from a critical hit. On a success, it drops to 1 hit point instead.

Actions

Multiattack. Nakhtet makes two Rending Claw attacks. If both hit one creature, the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Rending Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) slashing damage plus 7 (2d6) necrotic damage.

Sundering Screech (Recharge 5–6). Nakhtet looses a sonic shriek in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) thunder damage and being deafened for 1 minute on a failure, or half as much damage and no deafness on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Echo Step. Reaction (when a creature it can sense ends its movement within 5 feet): Nakhtet makes one Rending Claw attack against that creature.

A bat-eared sentinel risen from temple wrappings, its golden usekh collar still gleaming over linen-bound flesh, mouth frozen mid-shriek. It stands sentry-still until the living draw near, then erupts with clawing arms and a wall of sound.

Curse-Formula (signature). Once per turn as a bonus action, Nakhtet whispers a binding word at one creature it can see within 30 feet. That creature has disadvantage on the next saving throw it makes before the end of its next turn.

Actions

Ceremonial Sickle. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d6 + 2) slashing damage plus 4 (1d8) necrotic damage.

Reactions

Linen Shroud. When Nakhtet would take damage and is within 10 feet, Nakhtet may interpose its wrappings, taking half that damage itself instead.

A lesser servant interred at the sentinel's feet, gaunt under fraying linen, mouthing curse-words no living tongue remembers.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open from ambush: it has blindsight, so it strikes from a dark archway the party can't see into. Save Sundering Screech for when two or more are clustered in the cone. Pair it with a bigger threat — at this tier it is the alarm-and-anvil piece that pins a hero while the flagship closes.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP12d8+60 (114) To-hit+7Save DC14

Open by claw-rushing the squishiest mover (Tomb Sentinel gives advantage against anyone who moved), aiming to knock prone. Fire Sundering Screech the moment three are in the cone, then Echo Step anyone who tries to dance away. Kill-priority is the healer; pair it with a mummy lord or temple boss as the brutal close-range bodyguard.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP18d8+108 (189) To-hit+9Save DC16

Lead with the screech to deafen casters (no verbal spells), then claw down the prone. Undead Fortitude makes it shrug off the first kill — warn players to commit radiant or a crit. It is a frontline enforcer here: pair it with a flying or casting flagship and let Nakhtet hold the chokepoint.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Nakhtet?

Natively CR 6 (Tier 2, ~2,300 XP) as a Medium undead add-on. Use the Tier 1 line (CR ~2) for levels 1-4 or the Tier 3 line (CR ~11) for levels 11-15; the traits never change, only AC, HP, to-hit, and save DC.

Can Nakhtet be a companion or ally?

It's built as an adversary, but a necromancer or temple-cult patron could field it as a bound guardian. For a smaller ally use Senet, the Bound Acolyte in the companion block (AC 13, 45 HP) instead of the full sentinel.

Is Nakhtet solo-capable as a boss?

No. It has no legendary actions, so a single Nakhtet won't survive an action economy alone. Run it as an add-on to a flagship boss, or deploy two-to-three together to make the encounter a centerpiece fight.
