Nimrod
Nimrod — The Encounter
The Mighty Hunter, First King of Babel · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Nimrod
Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth, a mighty hunter before the Lord, and the beginning of his kingdom was Babel. So says the old chronicle, and so the wandering peoples remember him with a shudder. He was the first to teach men to gather behind walls and call one man king, the first to set the bow against beast and the spear against neighbor alike. Where his shadow fell, free tribes became subjects and the open plain became a hunting-ground with men for game. They say he girded himself in the skin of the first lion he slew, and that the great cat that walks beside him is its grandsire's blood, bound by a hunter's oath rather than any chain. When his masons raised a tower to pierce heaven and the tongues of the world were scattered for that pride, Nimrod did not repent. He only sharpened his axe and went looking for new lands to hunt.
Run Nimrod in Sixty Seconds
- Solo boss build. Nimrod plus his lion is a balanced fight for 4 heroes at his native tier; legendary actions let him act between turns, so never let players forget he and the lion are two threats.
- Open with the hunt. Throw a javelin or Crowned Command to mark the lowest-HP PC, then Multiattack to knock that target prone and let Mighty Hunter advantage snowball.
- Kill-priority. He always hunts the weakest, lowest-current-HP target he can reach. The lion follows the same mark via Pack Tactics. Concentration casters and downed heroes are his favorite prey.
- When bloodied, recharge and unleash Conqueror's Shout to stun the cluster, fall back behind Unbowed, and use legendary Hunting Strikes to finish whoever he wounded.
- Three ways to run it: as written for a deadly solo; drop a band for a fair fight (use the tier-2 line); or strip his legendary actions and field him as a war-band captain leading cultists, where he becomes a tough add-on rather than the centerpiece.
Nimrod
Medium humanoid (human), lawful evil
CR 9 · 5,000 XP · GUIDELINEMighty Hunter. Signature. Nimrod has advantage on attack rolls against any creature that has been reduced below its hit point maximum since the start of Nimrod's last turn, and against any creature that is prone or has the lowest current hit points he can see. The first time each turn he hits a creature he has hunted in this way, that creature takes an extra 9 (2d8) damage.
Tyrant's Resolve. Nimrod is immune to the frightened condition, and any ally within 30 feet of him that can see him has advantage on saving throws against being frightened.
Brute. A melee weapon deals one extra die of its damage when Nimrod hits with it (included below).
Actions
Multiattack. Nimrod makes two Great Axe attacks. If both hit the same target, that target must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Great Axe. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d8 + 5) slashing damage.
Hurled Javelin. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 30/120 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d6 + 5) piercing damage.
Conqueror's Shout (Recharge 5-6). Nimrod bellows the boast that built Babel. Each enemy within 30 feet that can hear him must make a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 18 (4d8) thunder damage and is stunned until the end of its next turn; on a success, it takes half damage and is not stunned.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Call the Lion (Bonus Action). Nimrod commands his hunting lion (his companion) to use its reaction to move up to its speed and make one Bite attack against a creature of his choice within reach.
Unbowed (Reaction). When Nimrod is hit by an attack, he can add 3 to his AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss. He can use this reaction even while prone.
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Stride. Nimrod moves up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Hunting Strike. Nimrod makes one Great Axe attack against a creature that is below its hit point maximum.
Crowned Command (Costs 2 Actions). Nimrod marks one creature he can see as quarry until the end of his next turn. He has advantage on attacks against it, and his lion companion may immediately use its reaction to move toward and Bite that creature.
A mountain of a man crowned in beard and pride, Nimrod plants one boot on a slain rival's skull while his great double axe rests easy on his shoulder and his hunting lion paces at his knee.
Nimrod, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEPack Tactics (signature). The lion has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the lion's allies (such as Nimrod) is within 5 feet of that creature and isn't incapacitated.
Actions
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Reactions
Run Down. When a creature within 30 feet of the lion takes damage, the lion can move up to its speed toward that creature and make one Bite attack against it (this is the reaction Nimrod triggers with Call the Lion).
A war-scarred lion that answers only to the Mighty Hunter, lunging at whatever its master marks as prey.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open by hurling a javelin at the squishiest target, then close and Multiattack the same victim to knock it prone. Save Conqueror's Shout for when 3+ heroes cluster. Send the lion at whoever the party healer is protecting.
Mark the lowest-HP hero as quarry and stack Mighty Hunter advantage onto him. Use the lion's reaction to gang up via Pack Tactics. When bloodied, lean on Unbowed and Conqueror's Shout to break the line before the party can focus him.
Run him as a true solo boss: use legendary actions to chase down whoever is bloodied, Crowned Command to sic the lion, and Conqueror's Shout to stun clusters. Kill-priority is the lowest-HP hero every round. Pairs with cultist archers or a Babel war-band if you want a full set-piece.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Nimrod?
At his native tier (3, levels 11-15) Nimrod is built around CR 9 (5,000 XP) as a solo boss whose legendary actions and lion companion let him play up. Scale him with the tier table: drop to the tier-2 line (CR ~5) for levels 5-10 or the tier-1 line (CR ~2) for levels 1-4. The traits stay the same; only AC, HP, to-hit, and save DC move.
Can Nimrod be a companion or ally?
Not really, he is a tyrant-king, not a follower, but his bound Hunting Lion makes an excellent ally or beast companion for a ranger or hunter-themed hero (AC 13, 95 HP, Pack Tactics, knockdown Bite). You can also recruit Nimrod himself as an NPC warlord for one campaign arc, then have him turn on the party once Babel is built.
Is Nimrod a spellcaster?
No. He is a pure martial hunter-king, all axe, javelin, and crushing presence. His only supernatural edge is Conqueror's Shout, a thunderous war-cry, and the unnatural bond with his lion. Run him as a relentless physical bruiser who controls the battlefield by marking and running down prey rather than by casting spells.
