Perseus and Pegasus
Perseus and Pegasus — The Encounter
The Gorgon-slayer riding the winged horse of the spring · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Perseus and Pegasus
When the hero rode out to free the chained princess from the sea, he did not go on foot. From the blood spilled at the Gorgon's beheading sprang Pegasus, the winged horse of the sacred spring, and the hero took it for his own. Together they are a single weapon: the steed climbs where no spear can reach, and the rider's curved blade, gift of the messenger god, finds the throat of any monster pinned against the sky. He keeps the slain Gorgon's head wrapped at his hip, for even in death its gaze turns the bold to stone. Sailors who glimpse the pair wheeling over the waves take it as a sign that some terror below is already marked for death. Where they pass, sea-beasts dive deep and tyrants bar their gates, knowing that neither walls nor water have ever stopped the horse that drinks from heaven's own well.
Run Perseus and Pegasus in Sixty Seconds
- Stay in the air. Perseus is a flying hit-and-run boss — open with a Flying Charge dive, hit, then climb out of melee reach. Never let him sit still on the ground.
- The Gorgon's head is the panic button. Unveil it (bonus action) when 3+ foes are clustered; the DC 14 Con save chain restrains, then petrifies. Save it for when it locks down the most enemies.
- Kill-priority for the players: anti-air. Anything that grounds or pins a flier (web, hold person, nets, ranged control) is his worst enemy — and his cue to flee and re-engage.
- When bloodied, stop trading blows. Climb, unveil the head, and pick off whoever failed the petrify save with legendary Ripostes from the sky.
- Three ways to run him: (1) lone aerial duelist harrying a party crossing open ground; (2) the hero who arrives to slay your sea-beast boss mid-fight; (3) a rival adventurer the party must out-fly or out-think, not just out-hit.
Perseus and Pegasus
Large celestial (mounted hero), neutral good
CR 8 · 3,900 XP · GUIDELINEPetrifying Trophy. Perseus bears the severed Gorgon's head, kept veiled in a pouch. As a bonus action he may unveil it: each creature within 30 ft. that can see it must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be restrained as its flesh begins to harden. A creature restrained this way repeats the save at the end of its turns; on a third failure it is petrified until freed by greater restoration or similar magic. He averts his own eyes and is immune.
Flying Charge. If Pegasus moves at least 20 ft. straight toward a target and Perseus hits it with the harpe on the same turn, the target takes an extra 9 (2d8) slashing damage and must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be knocked prone.
Actions
Multiattack. Perseus makes two attacks with the harpe. He may replace one with a Hooves attack from Pegasus.
Harpe (Curved Sword). Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) slashing damage.
Hooves. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) bludgeoning damage.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Vault Aside (Reaction). When Perseus is hit by an attack, Pegasus may beat its wings and bank, granting Perseus +3 AC against that attack. If the attack then misses, Pegasus may fly up to 20 ft. without provoking opportunity attacks.
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Wingbeat. Pegasus flies up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Riposte (Costs 1 Action). Perseus makes one Harpe attack.
Skyward Surge (Costs 2 Actions). Pegasus rears and beats its wings. Each creature within 10 ft. must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or take 9 (2d8) bludgeoning damage and be pushed 10 ft. away. Pegasus then flies up to its speed.
A bare-armed hero rides a rearing, feather-winged stallion above a churn of cloud and sea-foam, curved sword raised high and a veiled trophy lifted in his off hand. Steed and rider move as one creature, half cavalry and half divine omen.
Perseus and Pegasus, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEHeaven's Steed (signature). While you ride Pegasus, your mounted speed is 90 ft. flying, and you cannot be knocked prone by forced movement while in the air.
Actions
Hooves. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) bludgeoning damage.
Reactions
Banking Veer. When you are hit by an attack while mounted, Pegasus banks: you gain +2 AC against that attack and may move 10 ft. without provoking opportunity attacks.
The white-winged stallion of the spring suffers only the worthy to ride it, and rewards them with the freedom of the open sky.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open from the air with a Flying Charge, then stay 20+ ft. above the melee and pick off casters. If the party clusters, unveil the Gorgon's head to restrain two or three at once. Kill-priority is anyone who can ground a flier (nets, web, hold-type effects); pair Perseus with a ground brute so he can never be cornered.
Open by diving in a Flying Charge to drop the biggest threat prone, then climb out of reach with Wingbeat. When bloodied, unveil the Gorgon's head and let petrification do the work while you riposte from the sky. Kill-priority is ranged control that can pin a flier; he plays as a hit-and-run boss, so deny the party a moment to gang up.
Stay airborne and cycle Flying Charge, legendary Riposte, and Skyward Surge to keep clusters scattered and prone. Unveil the Gorgon's head the moment three or more foes are bunched. Kill-priority is whoever brings flight or anti-air; pair him with a Gorgon or sea-beast so the party fights on two fronts.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Perseus and Pegasus?
The home build is CR 8 (native tier 2, ~levels 5-10). Because he is a true centerpiece with legendary actions, his sheet plays up a band, so a tier-2 party of four should treat him as a hard, mobile boss rather than a speed bump. The tiers block also gives CR-2-ish (levels 1-4) and CR-11-ish (levels 11-15) stat lines.
Can Perseus and Pegasus be a companion or ally?
Yes. Pegasus, Bound (AC 12, HP 68) is built as a player's winged steed — granting 90 ft. flying mounted speed and a banking reaction that softens incoming hits. Perseus himself also makes a strong allied NPC: a sky-cavalry hero who dives in to slay a monster the party can't reach, then rejoins the line.
Is Perseus safe to use in published material?
Yes. Perseus, Pegasus, and the Gorgon's-head petrification are all drawn from public-domain Greek mythology, with no Wizards of the Coast Product Identity involved. This is a clean, original SRD-5.1-compatible stat block.
