Perun — The Encounter

Slavic thunder-lord crowned in storm, sword of living lightning · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Perun

In the old Slavic faith, Perun rules the bright heavens: god of thunder, lightning, oak, and oath, lord of the warrior and the storm. He rides the sky in a chariot of fire, hurling bolts at the serpent Veles who steals cattle, water, and the souls of the dead beneath the world-tree's roots. Where his axe or sword falls, oaks split and rain follows, breaking drought and washing the land clean. Warriors swore their truest vows upon his name, for an oath broken before Perun was answered by the bolt. The eagle is his herald and his eye, carrying his judgment on the wind. Mortals raised his idols on high hill-tops, ringed in oak and never roofed, so that nothing might stand between the god and his own bright sky. To face Perun in battle is to challenge the heavens themselves, and the heavens do not lose.

Storm Aura. Signature. Perun crackles with restless lightning. At the start of each of his turns, every creature within 10 feet of him that is wearing metal armor or wielding a metal weapon takes 7 (2d6) lightning damage. Difficult terrain of mud or water within 10 feet does not slow him.

Sky's Champion. Perun has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects, and he cannot be knocked prone by any force short of a deity's own.

Actions

Multiattack. Perun makes two attacks with Stormcleaver, or replaces one attack with Hurl Lightning.

Stormcleaver. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (2d10 + 5) slashing damage plus 9 (2d8) lightning damage. On a critical hit, the target must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of Perun's next turn.

Hurl Lightning. Ranged Spell Attack: +9 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (4d8 + 4) lightning damage, and the target cannot take reactions until the start of its next turn.

Thunderhead (Recharge 5-6). Perun calls down a bolt in a line 100 feet long and 5 feet wide. Each creature in the line makes a DC 17 Dexterity saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) lightning damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. A creature that fails is also deafened until the end of its next turn.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Skyborne. Reaction. When a creature Perun can see ends its turn within 30 feet, Perun may fly up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks, trailing sparks.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Strike. Perun makes one Stormcleaver attack.

Eagle's Eye. Perun targets one creature he can see within 60 feet. Until the end of its next turn, that creature has disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes, as a screaming eagle harries it.

Roll of Thunder (Costs 2 Actions). Thunder booms from Perun's blade. Each creature within 15 feet makes a DC 17 Constitution saving throw, taking 14 (4d6) thunder damage and being pushed 10 feet on a failure, or half as much damage and no push on a success.

Wreathed in light, the thunder-lord stands astride a shattered crag, his living-lightning greatsword raised to the heavens while a war-eagle bursts from his outstretched arm to ride the gale.

Storm-Borne (signature). Perun is immune to lightning damage and ignores the effects of strong wind. While flying, it has advantage on Dexterity saving throws.

Actions

Talons. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d4 + 4) slashing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 13 Strength check or drop one held item.

Reactions

Harrying Dive. When an ally within 30 feet is attacked, Perun dives at the attacker, imposing disadvantage on that attack roll. Perun then flies up to half its speed.

The thunder-lord's herald, a great eagle bred of mountain gales, that screams ahead of the storm and seizes weapons from oath-breakers' hands.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8 (~38) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with Hurl Lightning to deny a reaction, then close so Storm Aura punishes the party's armored front-liner. Kill-priority is the healer; chase fleeing targets with Skyborne flight. Run him as a furious storm-spirit menacing a low-level village, not yet a god.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP15d8+45 (~112) To-hit+7Save DC15

Lead with Thunderhead the moment two or more PCs cluster in a line, then Multiattack the survivors. When bloodied, fly above melee range and rain Hurl Lightning each turn. Pair him with serpent or wolf minions so he plays the airborne artillery the party cannot reach.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP21d8+90 (184) To-hit+9Save DC17

This is his home tier and a true solo boss. Open with Thunderhead down the party's formation, then Multiattack the heaviest-armored PC so Storm Aura and Stormcleaver lightning stack. Spend legendary actions on Strike and Roll of Thunder to keep melee clear; save Eagle's Eye to blunt the rogue's big hit. When bloodied, fly up and alternate Hurl Lightning with Thunderhead on recharge.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Perun?

At his native Tier 3 he is CR 11 (7,200 XP): AC 18, 184 HP, +9 to hit, save DC 17. As a solo-capable boss he carries legendary actions and a reaction, so he plays up a level or two against a party of four. Scale him to CR 2 (Tier 1) or CR 6 (Tier 2) using the tier table without changing how he plays.

Can Perun be a companion or ally?

Perun is built as an adversary and centerpiece boss, but his war-eagle Grom makes a strong ally or familiar-scale companion (AC 13, 26 HP, harries enemies and snatches weapons). If the party wins Perun's favor through an oath kept, he is better as a one-scene divine patron who hurls a single Thunderhead at their foes than a standing party member.

How do I keep a solo Perun from getting swarmed?

Lean on his mobility and aura. Storm Aura punishes melee clustering every round, Skyborne lets him reposition off-turn, and his fly speed plus Roll of Thunder push attackers off when he is surrounded. When bloodied, go airborne and play artillery so the party has to spend turns chasing him instead of dogpiling.
