Qiong Qi — The Encounter

Winged tiger of the western wastes, devourer of the just · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Qiong Qi

Among the four great perils that the old emperors drove to the world's edges, Qiong Qi is the one that gnaws at goodness itself. It dwells in the western wastes with the body of a tiger and the wings of some monstrous bat, and where lesser beasts hunt the weak, this one hunts the just. The grimoires of the celestial bureaus record its perversity plainly: when men quarrel, Qiong Qi devours the honest party and spares the liar; when it hears of loyalty, it tears out the loyal one's nose and carries the morsel home as a prize. It rewards the wicked with fresh-killed game, fattening cruelty wherever it roosts. Travelers who hear a roar rolling down from the mountains learn to walk a little crookedly, to speak no kind word aloud, lest the winged tiger smell virtue on the wind and fold its leathern wings down out of the clouds upon them.

Crooked Appetite. Signature. Qiong Qi hungers for virtue and despises it. It has advantage on attack rolls against any creature that has aided an ally, healed, or shielded another since the start of Qiong Qi's last turn. The first time each round it hits such a creature, that target takes an extra 9 (2d8) psychic damage as the beast tears at its good name.

Pounce. If Qiong Qi moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and then hits it with a claw attack on the same turn, that target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. If the target is prone, Qiong Qi can make one bite attack against it as a bonus action.

Actions

Multiattack. Qiong Qi makes one Bite attack and two Claw attacks.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d10 + 5) piercing damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d6 + 5) slashing damage.

Withering Roar (Recharge 5-6). Qiong Qi looses a roar that mocks every kindness ever shown. Each creature within a 30-foot cone must make a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) psychic damage and being frightened until the end of its next turn on a failure, or half as much damage and not frightened on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Wingbeat. When a creature within 10 feet hits Qiong Qi with a melee attack, Qiong Qi can use its reaction to beat its wings and fly up to half its flying speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

A tiger the size of an ox, mantled in ragged bat wings, its lion-maned head thrown back in an endless roar above a coiling, fur-tufted tail. The clay captures the beast mid-bellow, claws spread, every matted strand of its hide bristling with appetite.

Carrion Crier (signature). The magpie circles where blood will soon spill. While it is within 60 feet of Qiong Qi, the beast cannot be surprised and gains advantage on Perception checks relying on sight.

Actions

Raking Talons. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d6 + 2) slashing damage.

Reactions

Mocking Caw. When an enemy within 30 feet aids or heals an ally, the magpie shrieks; that enemy must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom save or have disadvantage on its next attack roll as Qiong Qi marks it for the kill.

A scavenger bird that trails the winged tiger to feast on what virtue it leaves behind, betraying every act of mercy with a jeering call.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d10+16 (60) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open with Withering Roar to scatter the party, then Pounce the healer to knock them prone for a free bite. Kill-priority is whoever buffs or heals — Crooked Appetite hands you advantage on them. As a 4-person T1 threat it is a hard mini-boss; drop a couple of bandit adds beside it rather than running it truly solo.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP12d10+60 (126) To-hit+7Save DC14

Dive in, Pounce the cleric or paladin prone, then Multiattack with the bonus bite. Save Withering Roar for when the party clusters to revive a downed ally — psychic plus frightened breaks the formation. Pair it with a bigger threat (a warlord or a dragon); Qiong Qi is the punishing add that hunts your support line, not the centerpiece.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP18d10+108 (207) To-hit+9Save DC17

Use Wingbeat to leapfrog between back-line targets each round, never letting melee pin it. Roar on cooldown into clustered casters; Pounce-and-bite the healer until they stop healing. At this tier it is a fast flanker beside a flagship boss — assign it the support line and let the boss hold the front.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Qiong Qi?

Natively CR 6 (2,300 XP) at Tier 2 — a Large monstrosity built as a punishing add-on, not a solo boss. The stat block scales to CR 2 for Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and CR 11 for Tier 3 (levels 11-15); the traits stay identical and only the numbers move.

Can Qiong Qi be a companion or ally?

Not as a tamed beast — its entire nature is to devour the virtuous, so it makes a treacherous patron at best. Its bound Mountain Magpie companion, however, can be run as a scout familiar (AC 13, 38 HP) whose Carrion Crier keeps its master from being surprised.

Why isn't Qiong Qi solo_capable?

It has no legendary actions and only a single reaction, so a party can focus it down between turns. Run it as the fast flanker that hunts your players' support line while a flagship threat — a warlord, a dragon, a rival peril — anchors the fight.
