Ragnar Skybreaker — The Encounter

Horn-helmed raider who splits shields beneath storm-grey skies · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Ragnar Skybreaker

They name him Skybreaker not for any feat against the gods, but for the morning his longship clove the storm-line off the northern fjords and made landfall where wiser crews turned back. Ragnar is a sworn man of a poisoned cause, one of the horn-helmed warband that follows the trickster's bilelight banner into raids the sagas would rather forget. He fights in the old way: shield first, axe answering, every blow aimed at the wood and iron between him and a man's heart. Skalds say he has sundered a hundred shields and never once dropped his own. He prizes a good death over a long one, yet has cheated both so far. Bind him into a war-host and he becomes its anchor, the warrior beside whom the weaker men hold their line. Where Ragnar's axe falls, the wall does not bend.

Shield-Splitter. Signature. When Ragnar hits a creature that is wielding a shield or that has cover from a shield or wall, the attack deals an extra 7 (2d6) damage and the target's shield (or one section of cover) is sundered. While a creature has no shield, Ragnar has advantage on attack rolls against it.

Battle Frenzy. Ragnar has advantage on saving throws against being frightened. The first time each turn he reduces a creature to 0 hit points, he can move up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Actions

Multiattack. Ragnar makes two attacks with his battle-axe.

Battle-Axe. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) slashing damage.

Shield Bash. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6+4) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Shield Wall (Reaction). When Ragnar or an ally within 5 feet of him is hit by an attack, he can add 2 to the AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss, provided he can see the attacker and is wielding his shield.

A broad-shouldered raider in a horned helm and riveted scale, axe low and round shield raised, Ragnar plants his boots on cracked stone as if daring the heavens to break first.

Hold the Line (signature). While Ragnar Skybreaker is within 5 feet of an ally, that ally cannot be moved against its will by an enemy of size Large or smaller and gains a +1 bonus to AC.

Actions

Spear. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) piercing damage.

Reactions

Interpose. When an ally within 5 feet is hit, Ragnar Skybreaker swaps places with that ally and takes the damage in its stead.

A grim oath-brother who would sooner die on his feet than let the warrior beside him fall.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open by charging the most armored or shielded PC so Shield-Splitter strips their defenses, then grind. If foes cluster behind a shield wall, sunder the front rank's cover and exploit the opening. Kill-priority: anyone hiding behind cover. Pair him with a tougher flagship; he is the shield-breaker piece, not the boss.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP14d8+56 (119) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open on the squishiest target a shield can't save, or split a defender's shield first. Use Shield Bash to drop a key PC prone, then both axe swings on them next turn. Kill-priority: ranged casters once their cover is gone. Pair with a giant or jarl flagship and let Ragnar anchor the front.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d8+120 (210) To-hit+9Save DC17

As an elite champion, lead with Battle Frenzy mobility: drop a minion-marked PC, then walk free to the casters. Sunder shields and cover every round so allies' attacks land too. Kill-priority: healers and controllers. Run him as the bodyguard-captain beside a far bigger threat.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Ragnar Skybreaker?

Natively CR 6 (Tier 2, levels 5-10). Use the Tier 1 line for a CR ~2 raider in low-level games, or the Tier 3 line for a CR ~11 elite champion. Traits stay identical across all three; only the numbers move.

Can Ragnar be a companion or ally?

Yes. As a sworn raider he makes a strong front-line ally or hired blade. His Shield Wall reaction protects adjacent friends and Shield-Splitter cracks open enemy defenses for the rest of the party. Run him as a loyal oath-brother or a temporarily allied mercenary.

Is Ragnar a solo boss?

No. He is an add-on champion, not a centerpiece. He has no legendary actions and is meant to fight beside a larger flagship threat or to anchor a warband's shield wall, not to carry an encounter alone.
