Rendon — The Encounter

Red-Eyed Bruiser of the Gutter Wards, Bare-Knuckle King of the Rat-Folk · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Rendon

They call him Rendon, the Bare-Knuckle King, and in the flooded undertowns where the rat-folk make their warrens he answers to no guild master. Folklore tells of vermin grown to the size of men in the rot beneath old cities, and Rendon is the cruelest such tale made flesh: a pit-fighter who broke every champion the gutter-pits set against him, then broke the men who ran them. He wears no true armor, only a scavenged spiked pauldron taken from a beaten foe, trusting instead to scarred hide and a lifetime of dodged blows. He does not raid for coin so much as for the joy of the brawl, and he favors a cornered fight, where a wounded beast hits hardest. Mothers in the lower wards hush children with his name. He keeps a single loyal cur from the fighting-kennels at his heel, the only creature he has never struck in anger, and woe to any who harms it within his sight.

Pack Tactics. Rendon has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of his allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.

Gutter Footing. Difficult terrain made of rubble, refuse, or wet stone costs Rendon no extra movement, and opportunity attacks against him while he moves through it are made with disadvantage.

Cornered Fury. Signature. While Rendon is below half his hit points, his fist attacks deal an extra 7 (2d6) damage and he can't be frightened. The first time each turn he reduces a creature to 0 hit points, he can immediately move up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks, baying a victory snarl that gives him advantage on his next attack.

Actions

Multiattack. Rendon makes three Wrapped Fist attacks. He can replace one with a Bite or a Tail Sweep.

Wrapped Fist. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) bludgeoning damage. On a critical hit, or if the target is already grappled by Rendon, the target must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d10+4) piercing damage, and the target can't regain hit points until the start of Rendon's next turn (festering gutter-bite).

Tail Sweep. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8+4) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Slip the Punch (Reaction). When a creature Rendon can see hits him with a melee attack, he can halve the damage and step 5 feet to an unoccupied space without provoking opportunity attacks.

A wall of grey muscle on two legs, Rendon stalks the alleys mid-swing: red eyes blazing, knuckles bound in bloodied rag, a single spiked pauldron over a barrel chest, his bald tail lashing like a whip behind him.

Kennel Loyalty (signature). While within 10 feet of Rendon, Rendon has advantage on saving throws against being frightened and on the first attack roll it makes each turn.

Actions

Savage Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d4+4) piercing damage, and if the target is Medium or smaller it must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Reactions

Guard the Master. When a creature within 5 feet of Rendon attacks Rendon, Rendon can make a Savage Bite against that creature.

A scarred fighting-cur from the gutter kennels, all teeth and ribs, that loves Rendon and nothing else in the world.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+24 (60) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open by charging the softest body in melee and grappling so Wrapped Fist can stun. Down here he is a mini-boss for a 3rd-level party; pair him with two or three rat swarms or thugs so Pack Tactics turns on. Kill-priority for the party should be Scrap first, since the cur's flanking is what gives Rendon advantage.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP13d8+65 (123) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open with a charge into the cluster, Tail Sweep to knock a body prone, then triple-fist the prone target. When bloodied, Cornered Fury wakes up, so don't pull him to half unless you can finish him. He is an add-on brawler: pair him with a spellcasting boss he protects, and let him peel off to chase fleeing healers using his victory-snarl free movement.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d8+120 (210) To-hit+9Save DC16

Scale him as the gate-guard bruiser before the real boss room. Open by isolating a striker, grapple, and stun-lock with repeated Wrapped Fist saves. Slip the Punch lets him shrug a big nova and reposition, so make the party spend its control on him; kill-priority is to burst him past bloodied in one round rather than chip, or Cornered Fury makes the back half hurt.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Rendon?

His home build is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a 5th-10th level party. The sheet also scales down to roughly CR 2 for tier 1 (levels 1-4) and up to roughly CR 11 for tier 3 (levels 11-15) using the numbers in the tier table; the traits and actions stay identical, only AC, HP, to-hit, save DC, and damage move.

Can Rendon be a companion or ally?

Yes. As an ally he is a frontline brawler who excels at grapple-and-stun lockdown and protecting a more fragile spellcaster; lean on Pack Tactics by keeping him adjacent to another ally, and remember his Bite shuts off enemy healing. His own companion, Scrap the fighting-cur, comes with him and guards him reflexively.

Does Rendon use weapons or magic?

Neither, really. He fights bare-knuckle with rag-wrapped fists, his teeth, and his whip-like tail, all bludgeoning and piercing damage with no resistances to bypass. He has no spellcasting and no ranged option, so terrain, prone, and forced movement that keep him out of reach are the cleanest counters.
