Sagittarius
Sagittarius — The Encounter
The Winged Archer of the Ninth House, loosed from the cloud-roads · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Sagittarius
Among the houses of the wandering stars, the Ninth is given to the Archer: a being neither wholly horse nor wholly maiden, but the wedded shape of hunter and steed. Old shepherds say Sagittarius rides the cloud-roads between earth and the cold lamps of heaven, and that no quarry it has marked may hide behind hill, wall, or weather, for its eye looks through such things as if they were smoke. Its arrows are not fletched with feather alone but with stolen starlight, so that each shaft burns a thin white wound through the dark. The wise do not pray to it for mercy, for the Archer knows no halting once the string is drawn; they pray instead to be unworthy of its notice. When it descends with antlers lowered and hooves striking sparks from the empty air, even brave companies have been known to break and scatter like coursed deer before the hunt.
Run Sagittarius in Sixty Seconds
- Hold altitude. Sagittarius fights from 60 feet up and runs every turn — open at range, never walk it into melee.
- Kill-priority is cover and the backline. It ignores half and three-quarters cover, so the hiding caster is its first target every round.
- When bloodied, it flees up. Skyward Bound lets it Disengage and fly off without provoking — keep a ranged or flying PC ready to chase.
- Three ways to run it: (1) pure airborne artillery raining radiant arrows; (2) hit-and-run Charger that knocks one PC prone then flies off; (3) the harassing add to a grounded boss, punishing anyone the boss has pinned.
Sagittarius
Large monstrosity, chaotic good
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINESharpshooter's Eye. Sagittarius ignores half cover and three-quarters cover when making ranged weapon attacks, and its ranged attacks do not have disadvantage from being within 5 feet of a hostile creature.
Charge. If Sagittarius moves at least 30 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a hooves attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 9 (2d8) bludgeoning damage and must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be knocked prone.
Actions
Multiattack. Sagittarius makes two attacks with its starbound bow, or one with its bow and one with its hooves.
Starbound Bow. Ranged Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, range 150/600 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d6 + 4) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) radiant damage.
Hooves. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d6 + 4) bludgeoning damage.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Skyward Bound (Bonus Action). Sagittarius takes the Disengage action and can then fly up to half its flying speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
A winged centaur of the upper airs leaps from a rolling bank of cloud, half-drawn arrow trembling against an antlered, star-marked brow, the same instant aimed and already away.
Sagittarius, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEPack Tactics (signature). The Sagittarius has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the hound's allies is within 5 feet of the creature and isn't incapacitated.
Actions
Searing Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 3) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) radiant damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 13 Strength save or be knocked prone.
Reactions
Run It Down. When a creature within 30 feet of the hound takes the Disengage or Dash action, the hound can move up to its speed toward that creature.
A long-limbed hound of pale fire, loosed to flush prey from cover so the Archer's shaft finds it in the open.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open at range from the air, plinking the squishiest caster while staying 60+ feet up. If the party clusters, drop a Charge into the middle, then Skyward Bound back up out of reach. Kill-priority is whoever lacks a ranged answer; pair it with a melee bruiser so the front line can't simply ignore the sky.
Open by ignoring cover and dropping two radiant arrows into the backline healer or blaster. When melee closes, Charge through with hooves to knock a key target prone, then Skyward Bound away and resume archery from altitude. Pairs with a bigger flagship boss as the artillery piece that punishes anyone the boss has pinned down.
Treat as a high-mobility skirmisher that the party cannot pin. Hover at extreme range, ignore cover, and focus-fire the lowest-AC threat to death over two rounds. When bloodied or surrounded, Skyward Bound straight up and out; pair it with grounded heavies so it never has to stand and trade blows.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Sagittarius?
Sagittarius is CR 6 (2,300 XP) at its native Tier 2, built for parties of levels 5-10. Scaled stat blocks are provided for Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and Tier 3 (levels 11-15) so you can drop it into almost any table.
Can Sagittarius be a companion or ally?
Yes. As a chaotic good monstrosity it makes a natural patron, mounted scout, or ally-of-circumstance — a celestial archer that bargains aid for a shared hunt. Its bound Comet-Hound can join the party even when the Archer itself stays aloof.
Is Sagittarius solo-capable as a boss?
No — it has no legendary actions and is built as a mobile artillery add-on. Pair it with a grounded flagship boss so it can harass the backline while the heavy threat holds the front. Alone it is a memorable mini-boss, not a full climactic encounter.
