Saumen Kar — The Encounter

Horned snow-troll of the polar dark, hunger given fur · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Saumen Kar

Among the Inuit shamans it is whispered that when the long night swallows the sun, the Saumen Kar wake in the high ice. They are the children of a hunger older than the sea-mother Sedna herself, horned things that wear the hides of the herds they devour. A saumen kar does not kill for cruelty but for the bottomless cold ache that lives behind its ribs; it will follow a sled-trail for days, patient as the freeze, eating its prey's exhaustion before it eats their flesh. The runners of the white tribes leave offerings of seal and walrus at the cairns to buy a hunter's passage, for a fed saumen kar may pass a camp by while a starving one will tear through the snow-walls at moonrise. Shamans say the only mercy is that the beast hunts alone, save when the ice-tribes drive a pack of them ahead of their warbands like hounds.

Snow Stalker. The saumen kar has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide in snowy or icy terrain, and difficult terrain composed of ice or snow costs it no extra movement.

Hunger of the Long Night. (signature) The saumen kar is driven by an endless gnawing famine. When it reduces a creature to 0 hit points with a melee attack, or hits a creature already below half its hit points, the saumen kar gains 10 temporary hit points and may immediately move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Actions

Multiattack. The saumen kar makes two attacks: one with its tree-trunk club and one with its claws.

Tree-Trunk Club. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 19 (3d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage, and a Large or smaller target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d6 + 5) slashing damage.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Frenzied Lunge. When a creature within 10 feet is reduced to half its hit points or fewer, the saumen kar can use its reaction to move up to 20 feet toward that creature without provoking opportunity attacks.

A hulking, horned snow-troll draped in frost-stiffened pelts, dragging a splintered tree-trunk it swings like a flail. Its tusked, half-frozen face is locked in a perpetual famished snarl.

Pack Hunger (signature). While within 30 feet of a creature reduced below half its hit points this turn, Saumen Kar has advantage on its next attack roll against that creature.

Actions

Rending Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) piercing damage, and the target's speed is reduced by 10 feet until the end of its next turn.

Reactions

Drag Down. When an adjacent creature stands up from prone, Saumen Kar can use its reaction to make a Rending Bite against it.

A lean, scarred lesser snow-troll that lopes at the elder's heel, snapping at anything that bleeds in the snow.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP6d10+18 (51) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open by lobbing the club at the most clustered pair to knock one prone, then wade in clawing. If clustered, it body-checks through the line to reach the back rank. Kill-priority: it ignores tanks and chases the lowest-HP target thanks to its hunger; pair it with a real flagship so the party can't simply burst it down.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC15HP12d10+60 (126) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open with the club on whoever is bunched up to force a prone save, then Frenzied Lunge onto the first character that drops below half. It is the muscle piece, not the brain: pair it with a caster or chieftain who marks targets, and let its Hunger trait snowball as squishies fall. Kill-priority the wounded; it will hand you a free 20-foot lunge if you let anyone get bloodied near it.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d10+100 (210) To-hit+9Save DC17

Run two or three as a starving pack flanking a flagship boss. Open the trunk-club on the cleric, prone them, then claw to keep them down. They feed off each kill, so AoE that drops a minion near them only fuels their temp HP; focus-fire one fully dead before it triggers Hunger again.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Saumen Kar?

Its native build is CR 6 (2,300 XP) for tier-2 parties (levels 5-10): AC 15, 126 HP, +7 to hit, save DC 15. Scale to CR 2 for tier 1 or CR 11 for tier 3 using the tier table.

Can Saumen Kar be a companion or ally?

Not the elder itself, but its pack-mate Frost-Maw, Bound (AC 13, 75 HP) works as a bound beast ally, with Pack Hunger and a Drag Down reaction. The saumen kar is built as an add-on adversary, so it shines pinned to a bigger boss rather than fought alone.

Is Saumen Kar a giant or a troll?

Mechanically it is a Large giant with cold immunity and a frost-stalking trait, drawn from Inuit folklore of horned snow-trolls. It has no regeneration, so it plays like a brutish frost giant rather than a true SRD troll.
