Son Goku — The Encounter

Stone-born Monkey King, Sage Equal to Heaven · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Son Goku

Born from a stone egg atop the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, the Monkey King schooled himself in the Way until he could leap a thousand leagues on a somersault cloud and split himself into a legion of squabbling copies. From the Dragon Lord of the Eastern Sea he took the As-You-Wish Cudgel, an iron pillar that swells to bridge the clouds or shrinks to hide behind his ear. He feasted on the peaches of immortality and the elixir of the alchemists, struck his name from the ledgers of death, and styled himself Sage Equal to Heaven. For his riot among the celestial courts a band of gold was clamped upon his brow, its spell a leash for his pride. Tamed at last, he walked west as a pilgrim's guardian, his cudgel breaking every demon that barred the road. He is loyal, vain, and utterly unkillable, and he knows it.

As-You-Wish Cudgel. Son Goku wields a self-sizing iron staff that obeys his will. As a bonus action he can shrink it to the size of a needle (vanishing it) or grow it to enormous length. When he grows it, his next melee attack this turn has reach 15 ft. and deals an extra 7 (2d6) bludgeoning damage.

Seventy-Two Transformations. Shapechanger. As a bonus action, Son Goku can magically polymorph into a Small or Medium beast or humanoid he has seen, or back into his true form. His statistics are the same in each form. Anything he is wearing or carrying transforms with him. He reverts on death.

Cloud-Somersault. Son Goku's movement does not provoke opportunity attacks. He can move along vertical surfaces and across liquids without falling, and his jump distance is tripled.

Actions

Multiattack. Son Goku makes three Iron Cudgel attacks. He can replace one with a use of Hair Soldiers (if available).

Iron Cudgel. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) bludgeoning damage, and if the target is Large or smaller it must succeed on a DC 15 Strength save or be pushed 10 ft. and knocked prone.

Hair Soldiers (Recharge 5-6). Son Goku plucks a tuft of fur and breathes on it, conjuring a swarm of tiny duplicate monkeys in a 15-foot cube within 30 feet. Each creature of his choice in the area takes 21 (6d6) bludgeoning damage and must make a DC 15 Dexterity save, taking half on a success. Creatures that fail are also knocked prone.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Somersault Cloud. Reaction (when Son Goku takes damage from an attacker he can see within 30 ft.): He vanishes in a streak of cloud and reappears in an unoccupied space he can see within 30 feet, halving the triggering damage. He can make one Iron Cudgel attack against a creature adjacent to his new position.

A wiry, monkey-faced warrior caught mid-swing, his flame-crested fillet blazing and his iron cudgel a blur. Prayer beads loop his fist as he plants one bare foot and unloads, every muscle wound like a spring.

Ride the Cloud (signature). While standing on the cloud, its rider gains a flying speed of 60 ft. and can take the Dash action as a bonus action. The cloud carries up to two Medium creatures.

Actions

Buffeting Gust. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6+3) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be pushed 10 ft.

Reactions

Whisk Away. When its rider is hit by an attack, the cloud can dart aside, granting the rider +3 AC against that attack. If this causes the attack to miss, the cloud moves its rider up to 20 ft.

A churning knot of golden mist that comes when whistled for, swift and wilful as the one who calls it.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open by growing the cudgel and shoving the heaviest-armored PC prone, then leapfrog past the front line to harry squishy casters. If the party clusters, save Hair Soldiers for the knot. Run him as a hit-and-run skirmisher who never stands still; pair him with a lair gimmick or a heavier brute so the action economy stays fair.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP15d8+60 (127) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open by growing the staff for 15-ft. reach, knock the tank prone, and use Somersault Cloud the instant he is bloodied to peel onto a caster. Hold Hair Soldiers until two or more PCs bunch, then drop the AoE and prone them. Kill-priority is the party healer; pair him with a bigger threat or a swarm of monkey minions rather than running him as the whole fight.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP23d8+115 (218) To-hit+9Save DC17

Open with a growing-staff prone-shove, then bounce around the battlefield with Somersault Cloud each round so he is never where the burst lands. Lead Hair Soldiers into any cluster and focus the healer. At this tier he reads as a flashy lieutenant: pair him with a flagship boss or a lair full of monkey duplicates, not as a solo encounter.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Son Goku?

His home stat block is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a level 5-10 party. The sheet also scales to CR 2 (levels 1-4) and CR 11 (levels 11-15) with the same traits and actions; only the numbers move.

Can Son Goku be a companion or ally?

Yes. He makes a brilliant trickster ally or rival-turned-friend, and his Somersault Cloud is a summonable companion in its own right (AC 13, 76 HP) that any rider can fly and fight from.

Is Son Goku a solo boss?

No. He has a strong skirmish reaction but no legendary actions, so a full party will out-act him. Run him as a flashy lieutenant or duelist alongside monkey minions or a bigger flagship threat.
