Suphlatus
Suphlatus — The Encounter
Six-Winged Angel of Dust, Who Grinds the Proud to Powder · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Suphlatus
The grimoires that name the watchers of the elements set Suphlatus over dust and the dry wind that carries it. He is no destroyer for cruelty's sake but an executor of humbling judgment: when a kingdom grows arrogant, when an idol is raised too high, it is Suphlatus who is sent to grind the work of vain hands back to the powder it came from. His six wings mark him among the higher choirs, and the ash that wreathes him is said to be the remains of a hundred fallen citadels he carries as both warning and witness. Soldiers who have faced his kind speak of armor and banners eaten away mid-battle, of breathing nothing but grit, of swords rusting to flakes in the hand. He spares the penitent and the poor, troubling only the towers of the proud. To bind or treat with him is perilous, for he answers a higher charge than any summoner's circle, and his patience for boasting is short.
Run Suphlatus in Sixty Seconds
- Hover, don't land. Suphlatus has fly 90 ft. with hover and Updraft. Keep it 5-10 ft. up and adjacent so Mantle of Dust blinds the melee line every round while ground-bound PCs can't easily reach it.
- Mantle first, every turn. At the start of its turn, everyone within 10 ft. rolls a DC 14 Con save or is blinded. Resolve this before attacks so blinded PCs swing at disadvantage and lose ranged accuracy.
- Recharge the cone. Stinging Gale (Recharge 5-6) is a 30-ft. cone for 6d8 radiant plus blindness. Hold it until two or more PCs bunch, then fire and reposition with Updraft.
- Kill-priority: the dust-immune. Anyone with blindsight, tremorsense, or fog-cloud counters neutralizes its whole kit. Target them first; ignore the front-liners it already keeps blind.
- Three ways to run it: (1) Humbling enforcer — sent to grind a proud tower or construct, ignoring the poor and penitent. (2) Choir lieutenant — leads lesser angels under a seraph. (3) Reluctant foe — fights only the arrogant, sparing PCs who yield.
Suphlatus
Medium celestial (angel), lawful good
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEAngelic Weapons. Suphlatus's weapon attacks are magical. When it hits with any weapon, the weapon deals an extra 2d8 radiant damage (included below).
Mantle of Dust. Signature. Suphlatus is wreathed in a slow cyclone of grinding ash. At the start of each of its turns, each creature within 10 ft. of it must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution save or have its sight obscured by grit: it is blinded until the start of its next turn. A creature already in flight that fails also has its fly speed halved until then as the dust fouls its wings.
Magic Resistance. Suphlatus has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Actions
Multiattack. Suphlatus makes two Grinding Axe attacks.
Grinding Axe. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d12+4) slashing damage plus 9 (2d8) radiant damage. If the target is a construct, an object, or a worked structure, the damage from the radiant die is doubled as the dust grinds it to powder.
Stinging Gale (Recharge 5-6). Suphlatus exhales a blast of cutting dust in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 14 Dexterity save, taking 27 (6d8) radiant damage and being blinded until the end of its next turn on a failure, or half damage and no blindness on a success.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Updraft (Reaction). When a creature Suphlatus can see within 10 ft. is reduced to 0 hit points, or hits Suphlatus with a melee attack, Suphlatus can beat its wings and fly up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Six storm-grey wings fan from an armored herald that hovers over shattered masonry, a glowing axe trailing motes of pulverized stone. Where it passes, proud towers settle into drifting ash.
Suphlatus, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEChoking Cloud (signature). Suphlatus occupies a 5-foot space of swirling grit. A creature that ends its turn within 5 ft. of Suphlatus must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution save or be blinded until the end of its next turn.
Actions
Abrasive Lash. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8+3) radiant damage, and the target cannot regain hit points until the start of its next turn as the dust scours the wound.
Reactions
Veil of Ash. When an ally within 10 ft. is targeted by a ranged attack, Suphlatus thickens the dust between them, imposing disadvantage on that attack roll.
A coil of glittering ash given crude purpose, Suphlatus hangs at its master's flank like smoke that refuses to settle.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open by hovering just out of reach and forcing the Mantle of Dust save on the front line so melee PCs fight blinded. Save Stinging Gale for when two or more cluster, then peel off with Updraft. Kill-priority: the party's healer or anyone keeping the rusting armor folks standing. Pair it with a flagship celestial or a cult leader; it is a humbling enforcer, not a lone boss.
Open with Stinging Gale on the tightest cluster, then close to hover-melee so Mantle of Dust blinds whoever stands adjacent each round. Two Grinding Axe swings shred constructs, summons, and barricades; aim the doubled-dust rider at any animated guardian. Kill-priority: ranged casters who can ignore the blind. When bloodied, use Updraft to gain altitude and reset the cone. Runs best leading a choir of lesser angels or guarding a higher seraph.
As a heavy add for an 11th-level table, lead with Stinging Gale, then hover-grind the front rank under perpetual blindness while two axe swings carve structures and summons apart. Kill-priority: anyone with blindsight or counters to the dust. Updraft after every bloodied trigger to stay airborne. Do not field it solo against this tier; pair it with a bigger threat or anchor it to a lair so the blindness and the gale stack with another action source.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Suphlatus?
Suphlatus is built at CR 6 (2,300 XP) at its native Tier 2, tuned for parties of levels 5-10. Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and Tier 3 (levels 11-15) versions are provided with the same traits and only the numbers shifted.
Can Suphlatus be a companion or ally?
Yes. As a lawful good angel of dust, Suphlatus aids parties who fight pride, tyranny, or unholy constructs. Use the bound dust-wisp Cinder for a smaller allied option, or run Suphlatus itself as a temporary guardian sent on a humbling errand.
Why is Suphlatus a celestial and not a fiend?
The render shows six feathered wings, gleaming half-plate, and a radiant grinding axe over shattered masonry — angelic, not infernal. In occult angel-lore Suphlatus is the spirit set over dust and dry wind, an executor of humbling judgment, so it is statted as a Medium celestial (angel).
