Susanoo
Susanoo — The Encounter
Storm-Sea kami who rides the wave with drawn blade · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Susanoo
Banished from the bright fields of heaven for grief made into violence, the storm-and-sea kami wanders the boundary where wave meets sky, and where it passes the tides answer like loyal hounds. Old fishermen carve its sigil into their prows, for to offend it is to drown, yet to win its favor is to ride out any gale untouched. It is no cruel spirit, only a vast and grieving one, prone to weeping rains and sudden rages that flatten forests. The longsword it carries was drawn, the grimoires say, from the body of a great serpent slain to free a maiden offered in sacrifice; the blade still hums with that ancient slaying. Sailors who meet it on the open water report a face neither beautiful nor monstrous but simply enormous, watching them the way the ocean watches small things, deciding whether today they will be spared.
Run Susanoo in Sixty Seconds
- Hold Riptide Call for a turn when three or more PCs are clustered — knocking them prone and shoving them 15 feet wrecks their action economy more than the damage does.
- Open by closing to melee and Multiattacking the lowest-AC threat; the lightning rider on each hit adds up fast against unarmored casters.
- Kill-priority spend legendary actions on Thunderbolt into backline spellcasters and archers — Tempest Aura already gives their ranged attacks disadvantage, so corner them.
- When bloodied Storm Soul auto-fires: 4d6 thunder, shove everyone 15 feet, then it free-moves. Use it to break a grapple or reset to open ground, not to stand and trade.
- Three ways to run it alone as a tier-3 solo with the full legendary kit, as a tide-themed warlord paired with elemental minions, or stripped of legendaries as a brutal mid-fight set piece.
Susanoo
Large celestial, chaotic neutral
CR 13 · 10,000 XP · GUIDELINETempest Aura. Wind and spray churn within 20 feet of the kami. The area is difficult terrain for creatures other than the kami, and ranged weapon attacks made through it are at disadvantage.
Storm Soul. When the kami is reduced to half its hit points or fewer, a thunderclap erupts. Each creature within 20 feet must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or take 14 (4d6) thunder damage and be pushed 15 feet away. The kami then moves up to its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Actions
Multiattack. The kami makes two attacks with Totsuka-no-Tsurugi.
Totsuka-no-Tsurugi (longsword). Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d10 + 6) slashing damage plus 9 (2d8) lightning damage.
Riptide Call (Recharge 5-6). The kami summons a crashing wave in a 30-foot cone. Each creature there must make a DC 17 Strength saving throw, taking 36 (8d8) bludgeoning damage and being knocked prone and pushed 15 feet on a failure, or half damage and no other effect on a success.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Stormstep. When a creature ends its turn within 10 feet of the kami, the kami can use its reaction to make one Totsuka-no-Tsurugi attack against it.
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Sea Stride. The kami moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Thunderbolt (Costs 2 Actions). The kami hurls a bolt at one creature it can see within 60 feet. That creature makes a DC 17 Dexterity saving throw, taking 22 (5d8) lightning damage on a failure, or half on a success.
Sword Sweep (Costs 2 Actions). The kami makes one Totsuka-no-Tsurugi attack against each creature within 10 feet of it.
Sculpted mid-charge atop a frozen breaker of foam and forked lightning, the storm kami rides the churning sea with katana raised and war-harness gleaming, every muscle locked in the moment before the blade falls.
Susanoo, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEStorm-Bonded (signature). While within 30 feet of the kami, the Susanoo has resistance to lightning and thunder damage and ignores difficult terrain caused by water.
Actions
Surging Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8 + 6) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) lightning damage.
Reactions
Undertow. When an ally within 10 feet is hit by an attack, the Susanoo surges in, and the attacker must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
A wave given teeth, the spectral beast pads at the kami's heel and drags down whatever the storm marks for ruin.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Riptide Call to scatter the clustered party, then wade into whoever it knocked prone. Use Stormstep to punish anyone trying to walk away. At this tier strip the legendary kit and run it as a terrifying mini-boss, not a true solo.
Lead with Riptide Call into a bunched front line, then Multiattack the squishiest target it can reach. Spend legendaries on Thunderbolt against backline casters. When bloodied, Storm Soul resets spacing in your favor.
Run it as a true solo: open with Riptide Call to knock prone and split the party, then full Multiattack. Each round spend legendaries on Thunderbolt (kill-priority: casters and ranged) and Sword Sweep when two or more are within 10 feet. Stormstep and the bloodied thunderclap keep melee from safely surrounding it; lean on Tempest Aura to neuter archers.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Susanoo?
Its native build is CR 13 (10,000 XP), tuned for a tier-3 party of levels 11-15. Scaled stat lines for tier 1 (levels 1-4) and tier 2 (levels 5-10) are provided in the tiers table.
Can Susanoo be a companion or ally?
As written it is a solo boss, but its bound Tide-Hound (AC 15, 124 HP) makes a strong allied beast or summon if you want a storm-themed companion at the table instead of a full adversary.
Is Susanoo a solo boss or an add-on?
Solo. With three legendary action options, the Stormstep reaction, and the bloodied Storm Soul burst, it carries the action economy needed to challenge a four-person party on its own at tier 3.
