Sven Swiftblade
Sven Swiftblade — The Encounter
Horned raider who walks through arrows to reach you · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Sven Swiftblade
They sing of Sven Swiftblade on the long oar-benches, where the old hands warn the young: do not loose your shafts at the horned man, for every arrow you spend only feeds his shield. He earned the name not for the speed of his strike but for how swiftly he crosses open ground, head down behind a shield already feathered with a dozen failed killings. It is said he ran a gauntlet of bowmen at the burning of a coastal hall and reached the archers before their second volley, and that the splinters in his shield are kept, never drawn, as trophies of the dead. He fights for plunder and for the saga that will be made of him, caring little for gods or lords. Where his banner of crossed axes is raised, doors are barred and the bells are rung, for the swift blade is already in the yard.
Run Sven Swiftblade in Sixty Seconds
- Shield first: Sven has resistance to ranged weapon damage and steps 10 ft. closer every time an archer misses him. Tell the bow-users this early so they stop wasting shots.
- Open with the charge: move 10+ ft. straight at the back-line caster or archer, attack, and use Reckless Advance to strip their save against Crushing Blow.
- Kill-priority is whoever can knock him prone or grapple him: his whole game is reaching melee, so anything that stops his advance hurts him most.
- When bloodied (63 HP): fire Skald's Fury for 15 temp HP and an advantaged attack, then look for a Crushing Blow to drop a key PC prone.
- Three ways to run him: as a duelist who hunts the casters, as the anchor of a shieldwall with Skarn and raiders, or as a captain beside a bigger flagship boss.
Sven Swiftblade
Medium humanoid (human), chaotic neutral
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEArrow-Studded Shield. Sven's round shield bristles with the arrows of every foe who tried to stop his charge. While he wields it he has resistance to damage from ranged weapon attacks, and the first time each turn a ranged attack misses him he may immediately move up to 10 ft. toward the attacker without provoking opportunity attacks.
Reckless Advance. When Sven moves at least 10 ft. straight toward a creature before attacking it, that target has disadvantage on the first saving throw it makes against his Crushing Blow before his next turn.
Actions
Multiattack. Sven makes two attacks with his hand axe, or one hand axe attack and uses Crushing Blow if available.
Hand Axe. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) slashing damage.
Crushing Blow (Recharge 5-6). Sven slams his shield rim and axe together against one creature within 5 ft. The target must make a DC 15 Strength saving throw, taking 22 (4d8+4) bludgeoning damage and being knocked prone on a failure, or half as much damage and not knocked prone on a success.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Shield Bash. When Sven hits a creature with his hand axe, he may use a bonus action to bash it with his shield. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be pushed 5 ft. away and have disadvantage on its next attack roll before the start of Sven's next turn.
Skald's Fury. When Sven is reduced to 63 hit points or fewer (bloodied), he may use his reaction to bellow a war-song; he gains 15 temporary hit points and advantage on his next attack roll.
A broad, bearded raider in horned helm and fur-trimmed plate, hand axe low and a round shield fanned with the arrows of men who shot at him and missed. He grins as he comes on.
Sven Swiftblade, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEShieldwall Brother (signature). While Sven Swiftblade is within 5 ft. of an ally, both he and that ally gain a +2 bonus to AC against opportunity attacks and ranged attacks.
Actions
Boarding Axe. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6+3) slashing damage, and the target's speed is reduced by 10 ft. until the end of its next turn.
Reactions
Cover the Charge. When an ally within 5 ft. is targeted by a ranged attack, Sven Swiftblade may interpose his shield, granting that ally a +3 bonus to AC against the attack.
Sven's oar-mate and shield-brother, a younger raider who guards the flank while the swift blade drives forward.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open by charging the squishiest caster or archer in the back rank, using Reckless Advance so their first save against Crushing Blow has disadvantage. If the party clusters, knock the kill-priority target prone, then Shield Bash to ruin its next turn. Pair Sven with a couple of raider minions so he is the wall the party must break, not a solo problem.
Open by closing the gap on the ranged threat; Arrow-Studded Shield lets him eat their first miss and step closer for free, so kill-priority is whoever shoots first. When bloodied he triggers Skald's Fury for temp HP and an advantaged Crushing Blow on the prone target. Run him alongside a tougher flagship boss or a war-band so the action economy is on your side, not his alone.
At this tier he is a captain in a war-host, not a lone duel; open against the rank that relies on ranged attacks and let the shield punish them. Crushing Blow + Shield Bash chains prone and disadvantage onto your kill-priority target every round. Pair him with a true lair-boss or several Skarn-type shield-brothers; alone, a level-13 party out-acts him.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Sven Swiftblade?
His home stat block is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a party of levels 5-10. The record also gives ready-to-run CR 2-style numbers for levels 1-4 and CR 11-style numbers for levels 11-15; the traits and actions never change, only AC, HP, to-hit, save DC, and damage move between the bands.
Can Sven Swiftblade be a companion or ally?
Yes. As an ally he is a frontline anchor: Arrow-Studded Shield draws ranged fire off softer party members, Shield Bash sets up the team's strikers, and Crushing Blow knocks priority targets prone. Run him as a hired sellsword or oath-bound shield-brother, ideally paired with his companion Skarn for a two-man wall.
Is Sven Swiftblade a solo boss?
No. He has no legendary actions and only a single bloodied reaction, so a full party will out-act him on his own. He shines as an add-on, captain of a raider war-band, or a lieutenant standing beside a larger flagship boss or lair.
