Thora Nightvenom — The Encounter

Plague-touched revenant who weeps her own venom · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Thora Nightvenom

They say Thora was a marsh-witch's daughter who drank a draught meant to make her deathless and got her wish too well. The bog took her body but not her hunger; now she walks the Bileblight fens of Lokt, sweating the very poison that unmade her. Hunters who find her trail follow drops of luminous green ichor through the reeds and rarely come back, for the venom that ruins her flesh has become her weapon and her shield alike. She does not rot so much as overflow, her wounds spitting back at the hands that open them. Locals leave milk and salt at the swamp's edge to keep her wandering away from the village wells, and they teach their children a single rule: if the water runs green and the frogs go silent, turn for home. Thora remembers nothing of who she was. She remembers only the taste of poison, and that the living still have warmth she has lost.

Weeping Venom. Thora's flesh constantly sweats a green ichor. The first time a creature hits her with a melee attack on each of its turns, that creature must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or take 4 (1d8) poison damage as the splattered venom burns it.

Undead Resilience. If damage reduces Thora to 0 hit points, she drops to 1 hit point instead if the damage is not radiant or from a critical hit (usable once per day).

Actions

Multiattack. Thora makes two attacks with her Venom-Slick Blade.

Venom-Slick Blade. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+3) slashing damage plus 7 (2d6) poison damage.

Bilespit (Recharge 5-6). Thora vomits a gout of corruption in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw, taking 14 (4d6) poison damage on a failed save and being poisoned until the end of its next turn, or half as much damage and not poisoned on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Lurching Step. Bonus Action. Thora moves up to half her speed without provoking opportunity attacks, dragging her venom trail behind her.

A lithe corpse-woman of green, sloughing flesh, her skull half-bared and her shortsword forever slick with dripping poison. She moves with a predator's grace that death never managed to take from her.

Carrion Cloud (signature). The swarm occupies another creature's space when it can. While it does, that creature has disadvantage on saving throws against poison effects from Thora and her allies.

Actions

Biting Cloud. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 0 ft., one target in the swarm's space. Hit: 7 (2d6) piercing damage, or 3 (1d6) if the swarm has half its hit points or fewer.

Reactions

Scatter and Reform. When the swarm takes damage from an area effect, it can move up to 10 feet, taking only half the damage.

A droning host of green-bellied flies that breeds in Thora's weeping wounds and never strays far from her trail.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · NATIVE
AC13HP52 (8d8+16) To-hit+5Save DC12

Open with Bilespit on the tightest cluster of PCs, then close with the swarm to stack disadvantage and double-tap a squishy caster with Venom-Slick Blade. Kill priority is anyone who can cast lesser restoration or deal radiant damage. Run her as an ambush skirmisher in marshland, not a stand-and-fight brute, and pair her with zombies or a bigger Bileblight horror as the anchor.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP126 (12d10+60) To-hit+7Save DC15

Lead with Bilespit, then Lurching Step in to flank and grind the same target down with paired blade strikes plus Weeping Venom punishing every melee retaliation. Focus down healers and radiant strikers first. At this tier she works as the venom-dealing lieutenant of a swamp lair, softening the party for a heavier flagship to finish.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP207 (18d12+90) To-hit+9Save DC17

Saturate the front line with Bilespit on recharge, then use Lurching Step to skirmish among the casters while Weeping Venom taxes every melee that reaches her. Prioritize anyone removing poison or dealing radiant damage. She is an elite minion here, not a solo threat. Field her alongside a larger Bileblight boss and a screen of lesser undead so the action economy stays in your favor.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Thora Nightvenom?

At her native first tier she is CR 2 (450 XP): AC 13, 52 HP, +5 to hit, save DC 12. Scaled stat lines for tiers 2 and 3 are provided if you want her to threaten higher-level parties.

Can Thora Nightvenom be a companion or ally?

She is built as an adversary, but a poison-themed party (a coven, a death cult, a plague-touched ally) could recruit her. Use her native-tier block, lean on Weeping Venom and Bilespit, and pair her with the Bilefly Swarm companion.

Is Thora a solo boss?

No. She has no legendary actions and only a single reaction, so a full party will out-act her. Run her as an add-on skirmisher or lieutenant alongside a flagship threat and a screen of lesser undead.
