Tumatauenga — The Encounter

Red-faced god of war, the first to wrestle his kin · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Tumatauenga

Of the children born to the Sky-Father and the Earth-Mother, only Tumatauenga counselled that the parents be slain so the world might know light, while his brothers wished merely to part them. When the brothers chose the gentler way, it was Tumatauenga alone who turned his fury upon each of them in turn — driving the wind, the forest, the sea, and the wild foods into hiding, and claiming dominion over war and over mortals who would learn to do the same. His twisted arm is said to be the mark of that first violence, flesh gone to gnarled root where he gripped his kin too hard. He is the patron of the warrior and the fisher, the one who teaches that everything taken must be taken by struggle. Carve his red face before battle, recite the whaikorero, and he may lend his nerve — but he despises the coward who will not meet a foe face to face.

Whaikorero (Challenge Roar). At the start of each of its turns, Tumatauenga may bellow a war-challenge. Each enemy that can hear it must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom save or have disadvantage on the first attack roll it makes against any creature other than Tumatauenga until the start of his next turn — the god goads all foes to face him alone.

First-Wrought Flesh. Tumatauenga's gnarled, bark-knotted arm is the relic of when he alone of the gods dared raise his hand against his kin. While at or above half his hit points, he has advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws, and cannot be moved against his will by any effect.

Actions

Multiattack. Tumatauenga makes two attacks: one with his Taiaha and one with his Twisted Fist. He can replace one attack with Hurl Spear.

Taiaha. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 19 (3d8+7) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 16 Strength save or be knocked prone.

Twisted Fist. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d10+7) bludgeoning damage. If the target is Large or smaller, it is grappled (escape DC 16).

Hurl Spear. Ranged Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, range 30/120 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d6+7) piercing damage, and the target's speed is reduced by 10 ft. until the end of its next turn.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Utu (Reprisal). Reaction: When a creature Tumatauenga can see makes a melee attack against an ally within 5 ft. of him, he makes one Taiaha attack against that creature — the war-god answers every blow struck near him.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Stride. Tumatauenga moves up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

War-Cry (Costs 1 Action). Tumatauenga roars. Each enemy within 30 ft. must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom save or have disadvantage on its next attack roll.

Twisted Fist (Costs 2 Actions). Tumatauenga makes one Twisted Fist attack. If it hits a grappled creature, the target also takes 9 (2d8) bludgeoning damage as he slams it down.

A towering war-god with a moko-carved snarl and feathered topknot, balancing on shattered stone — one arm hefting a carved taiaha, the other a knotted, root-twisted limb forged from his violence against his own kin.

War-Spirit's Ward (signature). While within 10 ft. of the warrior who wields it, allies have advantage on saves against being frightened.

Actions

Carved Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+5) piercing damage, and the wielder may shove the target 5 ft.

Reactions

Parry-Thrust. Reaction: When the wielder is hit by a melee attack, add 3 to their AC against that attack; if it then misses, make one Carved Strike against the attacker.

The god's own taiaha, its tongue-blade and feathered haft humming with challenge, made to fight beside a chosen warrior rather than for a lone champion.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP45 (6d10+12) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with the Challenge Roar to draw the party onto him, then Taiaha the nearest melee fighter and try to knock them prone. If two PCs cluster on one ally, use Utu to punish them. At this size he is a terrifying mini-boss — pair him with no minions and let his grapple isolate the squishiest hero.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP126 (12d10+60) To-hit+7Save DC15

Lead with Hurl Spear to slow a fleeing caster, then close and grapple them with the Twisted Fist so they cannot disengage. Kill-priority is healers — the Challenge Roar already punishes anyone who looks away from him. Run him with a warband of warrior adds who benefit from his roar.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP195 (17d12+85) To-hit+12Save DC16

Open by stating Whaikorero so the whole party is goaded to face him, then Multiattack the front-liner and grapple-slam the controller. Spend legendary actions on War-Cry and the 2-action Twisted Fist between turns, and use Utu to answer anyone who strikes near him. He is built to anchor a fight alone — but he sings best with a haka-line of warrior minions or a lair of crumbling stone.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Tumatauenga?

His home stat block is CR 11 (7,200 XP) for an 11th–15th-level party. Scaled tiers are provided for levels 1–4 (about CR 2) and 5–10 (about CR 6); the trait kit is identical at every tier, only the numbers move.

Can Tumatauenga be a companion or ally?

The god himself is a boss, not an ally, but his bound taiaha (AC 16, 117 HP) can fight alongside a chosen warrior — warding nearby allies against fear and parrying blows. Use it when the party earns the war-god's blessing rather than his wrath.

Is Tumatauenga solo-capable?

Yes. With three legendary actions and the Utu reaction, he generates enough extra turns to out-act a four-PC party, so he can anchor a climactic fight alone. Drop him a band if you add minions or a hazardous lair to keep the action economy fair.
