Tyr — The Encounter

One-Handed God of War, Oath, and Single Combat · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Tyr

Among the oldest stories of the northern peoples stands the one-handed god, keeper of oaths and master of single combat. When the great wolf could be bound by no chain, the gods forged a fetter of impossible things, and the beast would suffer it only if one of them laid a hand between its jaws as a pledge of good faith. The one-handed god alone stepped forward, knowing the bargain was a lie and that the price would be paid in flesh. The chain held. The hand was lost. He never cried out. From that day he is invoked at the swearing of every honest truce and the calling of every lawful duel, for he understands better than any what an oath truly weighs. Warriors carve his rune upon axe-haft and shield-rim before battle, trusting that he favors the brave who keep faith and brings ruin upon the one who breaks it. He does not love war. He simply refuses to flinch from it.

The Oathkeeper's Word. Tyr embodies the broken bargain and the price of it. Once per turn, when Tyr hits a creature that has, since its last turn, struck an ally of Tyr or fled from him, the attack deals an extra 14 (4d6) radiant damage. A creature that breaks a truce, oath, or surrender it offered Tyr automatically becomes marked by this trait until the encounter ends.

Unflinching. Tyr lost his sword-hand to the wolf and never once cried out. He has advantage on saving throws against being charmed, frightened, or knocked prone, and he cannot be surprised while conscious.

Magic Weapon. Tyr's axe attacks are magical.

Actions

Multiattack. Tyr makes two War-Axe attacks. If both hit the same target, that target must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

War-Axe. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d12 + 6) slashing damage.

Judgment's Edge (Recharge 5-6). Tyr sweeps his rune-axe in a wide arc. Each creature in a 15-foot cone must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw, taking 28 (8d6) slashing damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. A creature marked by The Oathkeeper's Word has disadvantage on this save.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Hold the Line (Reaction). When a creature Tyr can see within 5 feet hits an ally of Tyr with an attack, Tyr makes one War-Axe attack against that creature.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Step of War. Tyr moves up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Axe Strike. Tyr makes one War-Axe attack.

Words of the Oath (Costs 2 Actions). Tyr points at one creature he can see within 60 feet. It must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or be marked by The Oathkeeper's Word and have disadvantage on its next attack roll before the start of Tyr's next turn.

A towering, fur-cloaked warrior stands feral atop shattered stone, bare-chested and scarred, a rune-graven war-axe raised in his one good hand. His stare is the calm of a god who has already accepted what war will cost him.

Hound of the Threshold (signature). Tyr can sense any creature that has broken an oath within 60 feet, regardless of cover or invisibility. Such creatures cannot gain advantage against Tyr and he has advantage on attacks against them.

Actions

Rending Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d6 + 4) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Reactions

Guard the Gate. When a creature within 5 feet tries to move away from Tyr, he makes one Rending Bite attack against it. On a hit, the creature's speed becomes 0 until the end of its turn.

A great chained hound, scarred and snarling, set to watch the threshold and tear down any who flee their sworn word.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP55 (9d10+5) To-hit+4Save DC13

Run this as a wandering champion, not the deity entire. Open with War-Axe on the party's heaviest hitter and use Hold the Line to punish anyone who strikes the squishiest PC. Pair him with Garm or a pack of wolves so the action economy bites.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP127 (15d10+45) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open with Words of the Oath to mark the party face, then focus-fire that marked target so The Oathkeeper's Word lands. Save Judgment's Edge for when three or more PCs cluster to heal or rally. Hold the Line keeps melee honest; let Garm pin the runner.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP195 (17d12+85) To-hit+9Save DC16

Solo-capable: spend legendary actions on Axe Strike against whoever broke a truce or hit an ally, and Words of the Oath to lock down the party's burst-damage dealer. Kill-priority is the healer once they're marked. Recharge Judgment's Edge into clustered PCs, and use Hold the Line every round to tax the front line.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Tyr?

Tyr is built as a Challenge Rating 11 solo boss at his native Tier 3 (levels 11-15), worth 7,200 XP. Because he carries a real action-economy kit — three legendary action options plus the Hold the Line reaction — his sheet drops one band from a raw CR 13 god, letting a four-PC party still out-act him in a fair fight. Scale him down to CR 6 (Tier 2) or roughly CR 2 (Tier 1) using the tier table; traits stay identical, only the numbers move.

Can Tyr be a companion or ally?

Yes. Tyr is lawful good and a keeper of honest oaths, so he makes a natural patron or temporary ally for a party that fights with honor. As an NPC ally, lean on Hold the Line and Words of the Oath to support the PCs rather than overshadow them, and drop him to the Tier 1 or Tier 2 numbers so he reinforces the party instead of soloing the encounter for them. His hound Garm can also be granted to a worthy oath-sworn champion.

How do I make Tyr a fair solo boss without a TPK?

Use his marking honestly: telegraph who he brands with Words of the Oath so players can reposition their healer. Spread Judgment's Edge so it rewards good spacing rather than ambushing a clumped party, and remember his radiant rider only triggers on marked or oath-breaking targets, giving players agency to avoid it. Pair him with Garm for action economy at lower tiers, and at Tier 3 let the legendary actions create tension without chaining three full Multiattacks into one PC in a single round.

The Legend

Tyr emerges from the oldest stories humanity ever told — legends that survived because they contained truths too dangerous to speak plainly. Clay Cyanide's interpretation strips away centuries of artistic softening to reveal the original terror and majesty that made ancient peoples build temples and offer sacrifices. The sculpt captures Tyr at the peak of their power: every muscle tensed, every detail rendered with the kind of obsessive precision that rewards hours of close-range painting. With 13,364 views from the community, this is one of the most sought-after mythological miniatures in the catalog.
