Uzume — The Encounter

Dread-Female-of-Heaven, whose dance coaxed the dawn from hiding · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Uzume

When the sun-spirit shut herself within the rock-cave and the world went dark, the gods despaired — until the Dread-Female-of-Heaven overturned a tub, mounted it, and danced. She bared herself to laughter, stamped and reeled, and the eight hundred myriad deities roared with mirth so loud the curious sun peered out to see what joy could thrive without her. In that instant her light was seized and the dawn restored. Uzume is the patron of revelry, mirth, and the stubborn courage that answers grief with celebration. Shrine-dancers invoke her before any working that must lure something hidden into the open. She carries the sakaki branch hung with mirror-shards, and where she steps, shadows thin and the frightened find their feet again. To bind a despairing heart in her presence is to feel it, against all reason, begin to dance.

Mirthful Aura. Allies within 20 feet of Uzume have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened, and a frightened or charmed ally that starts its turn in the aura may immediately repeat the save.

Dance of the Cave-Door. Signature. Uzume's wild, joyous dance is impossible to look away from. When she takes the Dash or Disengage action she may also force one creature that can see her to make a DC 15 Wisdom save or be unable to take reactions until the start of its next turn, transfixed by her revelry.

Actions

Multiattack. Uzume makes two Sakaki Branch attacks, or makes one Sakaki Branch attack and uses Peal of Laughter (if available).

Sakaki Branch. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d8 + 4) radiant damage, and the target sheds dim light in a 5-foot radius until the end of its next turn (cannot benefit from being unseen).

Peal of Laughter (Recharge 5–6). Uzume bursts into ringing laughter. Each enemy in a 30-foot cone must make a DC 15 Charisma save. On a failure a creature takes 21 (6d6) psychic damage and falls prone with helpless mirth; on a success it takes half damage and is not knocked prone.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Inviting Step (Bonus Action). Uzume moves up to 15 feet without provoking opportunity attacks, weaving through the dance.

Bright Reproach (Reaction). When a creature she can see within 30 feet hits an ally, Uzume sears it with a flash of dawn-light: the attacker takes 9 (2d8) radiant damage.

She stands atop an overturned tub mid-dance, sakaki branch thrust toward the sky, a stone lantern and swaying bamboo framing the moment the sun first looked out again. Every line of her silk and crown sings of irresistible, defiant joy.

Mirror-Light (signature). Once per turn, when Uzume is within 30 feet of the creature it aids, it may cause that creature's next attack to deal an extra 7 (2d6) radiant damage.

Actions

Lantern Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d8 + 2) radiant damage.

Reactions

Rallying Gleam. When an ally within 20 feet drops to 0 hit points, Uzume may flare its lantern; that ally instead drops to 1 hit point. Recharges after a long rest.

A small lantern-spirit kindled from the stone toro at her feet, bobbing like a will-o'-wisp to light the dancer's path.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP9d8+18 (58) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with Peal of Laughter to scatter and prone a low-level cluster, then dance free with Inviting Step. Kill-priority is whatever is frightening your party — her aura and Bright Reproach turn the fight. Pair her with a tougher ogre or oni so she plays support, not target.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP19d8+38 (123) To-hit+7Save DC15

Run her as the buffer/controller in a celestial warband: stay near allies for Mirthful Aura, lead each round with Dance of the Cave-Door to lock the enemy's best reactor, and Peal of Laughter when two or more PCs bunch up. Don't melee-trade alone — keep a frontline (oni, tengu, kami) between her and the party. Concentrate Sakaki Branch on whoever relies on stealth, since her light strips it.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP27d8+108 (229) To-hit+9Save DC17

At high tier she anchors a shrine-court or lair full of lesser kami: she holds the back line, keeps allies un-frightenable, and floods clustered intruders with Peal of Laughter. Lead with Dance of the Cave-Door on the party's controller, then Bright Reproach every time the boss is struck. Pair her with a bigger threat (an oni warlord or storm-kami) — she is a force multiplier, not a solo.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Uzume?

Her home build is CR 6 (2,300 XP) for a 5th–10th-level party. The sheet also scales down to roughly CR 2 for tier 1 and up to roughly CR 11 for tier 3 — traits and actions stay identical, only AC, HP, to-hit, save DC, and damage move between the bands.

Can Uzume be a companion or ally?

Yes — she is a chaotic-good celestial of mirth and dawn, a natural patron or quest-ally. Run her stat block as written on the party's side, or hand players the smaller Hikari lantern-spirit as a buffing companion that boosts radiant damage and can rescue a downed ally once per rest.

Is Uzume a solo boss?

No. She has no legendary actions and only one punishing reaction, so a four-player party out-acts her quickly. She shines as a support and control piece — pair her with a bigger threat such as an oni warlord or storm-kami and let her aura, Peal of Laughter, and Dance of the Cave-Door multiply that threat's force.
