White Tiger — The Encounter

Bai Hu, White Guardian of the Western Quarter · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is White Tiger

Among the Four Symbols that quarter the heavens, the White Tiger 西方白虎 keeps the western watch, where the sun goes down and the year goes to ground. It is the beast of metal and of autumn, of harvest blades and the clean cut that ends things in their season, and the old astronomers fixed it among seven western mansions of stars. Where it walks the air sharpens and grows thin, for it carries the dying breath of the year in its coat of pale fire. Soldiers once painted its likeness on their banners and shields, trusting it to turn aside the swords of enemies, for it is a guardian and not a glutton — it kills only what the order of seasons demands. To meet it is to be measured: the just it lets pass, but those who have hoarded, cheated, or broken faith it pursues without sound until the western gate yawns and takes them down into the long quiet of winter.

Keen Senses. The tiger has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.

Guardian of the West. Signature. The White Tiger is the autumn-beast, lord of metal and the dying of the year. The first time it hits a target on each of its turns, the strike carries the chill of the western wind: the target takes an extra 7 (2d6) cold damage and must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution save or have its speed halved until the end of its next turn. A creature reduced to its last breath by this cold is shrouded in pale frost as a sign the western gate has opened for it.

Actions

Multiattack. The White Tiger makes one Bite attack and one Claws attack. If both hit the same target, the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be knocked prone.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+5) piercing damage.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d6+5) slashing damage.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Pounce (Bonus Action). The White Tiger moves up to its speed toward a creature it can see and does not provoke opportunity attacks from that creature.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Prowl (1 action). The White Tiger moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Rend (1 action). The White Tiger makes one Claws attack.

Roar of the West (2 actions). The tiger looses a wind-borne roar. Each enemy within 20 feet must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom save or take 9 (2d8) cold damage and be unable to take reactions until the end of its next turn.

A great pale tiger crouches mid-pounce, its fur streaming back into crests of cold flame, jaws split in a fang-bared snarl that smells of the first autumn frost.

Western Ward (signature). Allies within 10 feet of the bound tiger have advantage on saving throws against being frightened, and can add 1d4 to one Dexterity saving throw they make (no action required) once per turn.

Actions

Raking Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) cold damage.

Reactions

Seasonal Pounce. When an ally within 30 feet is hit by an attack, the tiger may move up to its speed toward the attacker; if it ends adjacent, the attacker has disadvantage on its next attack roll before the start of the tiger's next turn.

Sworn to a worthy keeper, the White Tiger pads at their flank, a wall of cold muscle that turns blades aside and answers any harm done to those it guards.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+24 (60) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open with Pounce into a Multiattack on the squishiest caster and try for the knockdown. Use Prowl and Roar of the West to peel back through clustered foes so it never gets pinned. Even diminished it plays as a fast skirmish boss; pair it with a few Dynasty Spearmen so the party must split attention.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP12d10+48 (114) To-hit+7Save DC14

Open by Pouncing onto the backline and Multiattacking to prone-lock a target, then spend legendary Rends between turns to whittle a kill. Kill-priority is anyone who can halt its movement; Roar of the West when two or more enemies cluster to shut off their reactions. As a true solo it out-acts a four-PC party — but it shines fronting Dynasty Archers or beside a bigger guardian beast like the Vermillion Bird.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d10+120 (230) To-hit+9Save DC16

Lead with Pounce, prone the highest-damage PC, then alternate Multiattacks and legendary Rends to keep someone always on the floor. Save Roar of the West for tight formations to deny a full round of reactions. At this tier run it as the lair's apex guardian with minions feeding it flanks, or pair it with another Four-Symbols beast for a paired-boss fight.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is White Tiger?

Natively CR 6 (Tier 2, levels 5-10) — a roughly 2,300 XP solo guardian beast. Because it carries a real action-economy kit (Pounce, three legendary options, the cold-wind signature), its sheet sits one band below where a CR 6 would normally land; the kit lets it play up against a full party. Drop the numbers for a Tier 1 (~CR 2) group or raise them for a Tier 3 (~CR 11) lair fight using the tier table.

Can White Tiger be a companion or ally?

Yes. Use the Bai Hu, Bound profile (AC 15, 68 HP): a worthy keeper gains a fast guardian that wards allies against fear, lends a die to their saves, and Pounces to punish anyone who strikes those it protects. It fits a paladin, ranger, or anyone the western guardian judges to be just.

Is the White Tiger evil?

No — it is lawful neutral, a guardian rather than a predator. It kills only what the turning of the seasons demands and lets the just pass untouched, but it pursues oath-breakers and hoarders relentlessly, which makes it as fitting a foe for a corrupt party as a protector for an honest one.
