Wukong
Wukong — The Encounter
The Monkey King, leaper of clouds, born of stone · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Wukong
Hatched from a stone egg atop the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, the Monkey King wrested a famine of respect from gods and dragons alike. From the dragon courts beneath the sea he claimed the As-You-Will Cudgel, a pillar of star-iron that shrinks to a needle behind his ear or grows to prop up the sky. He raided the orchard of immortality, drank the elixir of the alchemists, and was cast into a furnace meant to unmake him, emerging instead with eyes that pierce illusion and a body no blade can mar. Seventy-two transformations answer his whim; a single plucked hair becomes a host of brawling doubles. He treads the clouds with a single somersault, crossing leagues between heartbeats. Bind him to a sworn pilgrimage and he is the truest of guardians; cross him idly and he will pull down the rafters of heaven for the sport of it, laughing all the while.
Run Wukong in Sixty Seconds
- Solo this one. Wukong carries a real action kit: Multiattack, two bonus-action leaps, and three legendary options. A 4-PC party at level 11-13 is a fair fight; do not also add a wall of minions.
- Kill-priority is your healer. He opens by leaping the front line entirely to land on whoever keeps the party standing, so warn back-liners they are the target.
- Stack his legendary actions. Hold them for Staff Spin to punish whoever just hit him, or Defiant Roar (2 actions) to frighten a cluster before you Cloud Leap away.
- When bloodied, reposition. Indestructible Will drops him to 1 HP instead of 0 the first time each turn, so play the staying power: roar, leap clear, recharge Hair-Clone Swarm, come back swinging.
- Three ways to run him: a lawful-binding guardian sworn to a pilgrimage, a trickster antagonist who only wants the fight, or a wild-card third party who pulls the rafters down on everyone for sport.
Wukong
Medium celestial (shapechanger), chaotic neutral
CR 11 · 7,200 XP · GUIDELINESeventy-Two Transformations. Wukong can use a bonus action to magically polymorph into a Small or Medium beast, or back into his true form. His statistics, other than size, are the same in each form. Any equipment he wears or carries melts into the new form. He reverts to his true form if he dies.
Cloud-Born Reflexes. Wukong has advantage on Dexterity saving throws against effects he can see, and on saving throws against being grappled or restrained. He cannot be surprised while conscious.
Indestructible Will. Forged in a furnace and tempered by the heavens, Wukong has advantage on saving throws against spells and magical effects. The first time each turn he would be reduced to 0 hit points, he is instead reduced to 1 hit point.
Actions
Multiattack. Wukong makes three attacks with his As-You-Will Cudgel.
As-You-Will Cudgel. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft. (15 ft. on a bonus-action lengthen), one target. Hit: 16 (2d10 + 5) bludgeoning damage, and if the target is Large or smaller it must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Hair-Clone Swarm (Recharge 5-6). Wukong plucks a tuft of fur and breathes it into a flurry of fighting clones. Each creature of his choice within 20 feet must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw, taking 28 (8d6) bludgeoning damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. Each creature that fails is also knocked prone.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Somersault Cloud (Bonus Action). Wukong leaps up to 60 feet through the air without provoking opportunity attacks, landing on any surface that will bear his weight.
Cudgel Length (Bonus Action). Until the start of his next turn, the reach of his As-You-Will Cudgel increases to 15 feet.
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Staff Spin. Wukong makes one As-You-Will Cudgel attack.
Cloud Leap (Costs 1 Action). Wukong moves up to half his fly speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Defiant Roar (Costs 2 Actions). Wukong looses an immortal's roar. Each enemy within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of him until the end of its next turn.
An armored monkey-faced immortal frozen mid-leap, swinging a gold-banded cudgel overhead while his monk robes flare like a banner of smoke. Born from stone, he wears the heavens' own gilded lamellar with a brawler's grin.
Wukong, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEBorrowed Cloud (signature). While within 30 feet of Wukong, Wukong's walking speed is doubled and she ignores difficult terrain, riding the wake of his cloud-step.
Actions
Twin Sabers. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) slashing damage. Wukong may make this attack twice on her turn.
Reactions
Pilgrim's Guard. When an ally Wukong can see within 5 feet is hit by an attack, Wukong imposes disadvantage on that attack roll, intercepting the blow with her blades.
A road-worn pilgrim-guard who keeps pace with the Monkey King on a stolen scrap of cloud, sabers flashing where his cudgel cannot reach.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Somersault Cloud onto the squishiest caster, then three cudgel swings to knock it prone. If foes cluster, save Hair-Clone Swarm for the moment two or more stand within 20 feet. Reduced to a duelist here, so pair him with skirmisher minions rather than running him alone.
Lead by leaping over the front line to hammer the healer or controller; lengthen the cudgel to strike past bodyguards. Spend legendary actions on Staff Spin against whoever just hit him. When bloodied, Defiant Roar to scatter the cluster, then Cloud Leap out of the kill box and reset.
He is a true solo boss: open with Somersault Cloud onto the back-line, three swings, then end turn loaded for legendary Staff Spins on each hit he takes. Kill-priority is your healer. When bloodied, Hair-Clone Swarm the pile, Defiant Roar to break formation, then Cloud Leap clear and let Indestructible Will buy a second wind. Mei mirrors his leaps and screens the party's flank.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Wukong?
Wukong is built as a CR 11 solo boss (7,200 XP), native to Tier 3 (levels 11-15). Because he carries a genuine action-economy kit, two bonus-action leaps and three legendary options, his sheet drops one band so he plays up a step against a full party. Scaled stat blocks for Tier 1 and Tier 2 are provided if you want him to menace a lower-level group.
Can Wukong be a companion or ally?
Yes. Bound to a sworn pilgrimage, the Monkey King is a loyal, larger-than-life guardian; just expect him to solve problems by hitting them. He pairs naturally with Mei, Bound, the pilgrim-guard who rides his cloud-step and screens the party's flank with her sabers.
How do I make the fight feel mythic, not just hard?
Lean on his legend at the table: describe the cudgel growing from a needle to a sky-pillar, the plucked hairs becoming a brawling crowd, and his somersault crossing the room in a single beat. Indestructible Will means he should refuse to stay down, taunting the party each time he survives, exactly as the furnace-tempered immortal of the tales would.
